Iggy Pop Movie

By Zachary Swickey

Few venues have the legendary status of the now-defunct CBGB – the NYC club where a who’s who of rock and punk superstars got their start throughout the '70s and '80s.

An upcoming film will document the iconic venue’s story and some intriguing actor choices have been revealed. Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins is set to play Stooges’ frontman Iggy Pop (he does have the bod for it), Johnny Galecki from “The Big Bang Theory” will play music manager Terry Ork and actress Mickey Sumner will delve into the role of Patti Smith.

The film, dubbed simply “CBGB,” will focus on the punk rock music scene for which the club was the epicenter. Bands from the Ramones to the Talking Heads to Blondie all got their start and shaped their sound at the legendary venue. The club was forcibly closed in 2007 with owner Hilly Kristal, who will be played in the film by Alan Rickman, unfortunately passing away just a year later.

Malin Ackerman, Joel David Moore and "Harry Potter" star Rupert Grint have also snagged roles in the ensemble drama. Director Randall Miller – best known for the star-studded 2008 indie hit "Bottle Shock" – co-wrote the effort with Jody Savin.

Production is expected to begin on June 25 in Savannah, Georgia, before heading to New York.

Mumford

By Zachary Swickey

Mumford & Sons have been laying low while working on the follow-up record to their breakthrough ’09 debut Sigh No More, and while album number two still isn’t finished, the British folk band has thankfully released a brand new track, “Learn Me Right,” which appears on the soundtrack to Pixar’s newest film, “Brave.”

While Mumford and Co. provide the music for the tune, 16-year-old English musician Birdy provides the vocals. Her name isn’t huge in the states, but she won the 2008 Open Mic competition in the UK. Birdy also recorded a cover of Bon Iver’s “Skinny Love” that got her plenty of positive attention.

"It's quite fun doing a song for a movie rather than for an album. We liked the idea of having an orchestra in the background and having a girl like Birdy sing - it's been quite liberating,” frontman Marcus Mumford said of the track.

“Brave” producer Katherine Sarafian was more than satisfied with what the band came up with. "'Learn Me Right' is an amazing song. I feel something every time I hear it,” she gushed.

“Mumford & Sons sketched out a piece that would do justice to the culminating moment of the movie, underscoring the emotion, heart and the lessons learned between mother and daughter," she continued. "They really found that moment of truth in the story we were trying to tell and it takes the movie to a new level at the end.”

“Brave” features the voices of Kelly MacDonald, Billy Connolly, and Emma Thompson. The film hits theaters on June 22 with the soundtrack being released three days before on June 19.
Meanwhile, Mumford & Sons will be touring the UK this summer as they road test new material from their upcoming sophomore record.

"50 Shades of Grey" is a bona fide phenomenon. Not only is the erotic novel a bestseller, it is being adapted into a film that has some of Hollywood's hottest leading men falling all over themselves to get cast as Christian Grey, the kinky male lead.

Now, "Saturday Night Live" is taking aim at the S&M book's popularity in a hilarious spoof. What do you get the woman who has it all on Mother's Day? Well, you might want to start with a little alone time.

Watch:

Sidebar: Consider yourself lucky if you are reading this outside of a major city with a popular mass-transit system. We will never look at the middle-aged lady sitting across from us on the NYC subway reading "50 Shades of Grey" the same way again. (And we're not going to lie, we were already a little uncomfortable to begin with.)

Mariah Carey

By Elizabeth Lancaster

Mariah Carey fans can let out a sigh of relief! Everyone’s favorite diva has just announced she is back to doing what she does best – making music!

The songstress took to her Facebook page yesterday to announce she has recently written and recorded a new track. "Lil' excited to share with you that I wrote and recorded a song for Lee Daniels' new movie 'The Paperboy' called Mesmerized! Hope to play it for you very soon," she wrote.

Between her recent work as an actress and the birth of her twins, Mariah has been a busy lady and has slowed way down on musical releases. We think fans everywhere will agree a Mariah-worthy hit is long overdue!

Daniels and Carey have worked together previously in a variety of capacities, most memorably on his Oscar-nominated film “Precious” in 2009, where Mariah surprised everyone with her skillful performance as a social worker in Harlem during the late-'80s.

“The Paperboy” follows a reporter's return to his hometown to start an investigation of a death row inmate's case. Carey is not the only superstar attached to the film, which is set to premiere in competition at the Cannes Film Festival later this month. The cast includes heavy hitters such as Zac Efron, Nicole Kidman, Matthew McConaughey and John Cusack.

With this star-studded cast, Lee Daniel’s direction and Mariah Carey to serenade, how could audiences not be mesmerized?

Are you excited to hear Mariah’s new song? Let us know in the comments below.

Well, at least we can assume that everyone involved had the best intentions.

Paul McCartney directed the video for his latest single and based on pure aesthetics and originality, it's a lovely clip. Shot in black and white, "My Valentine" features Oscar winner Natalie Portman and Johnny Depp, star of one of our most anticipated summer movies, "Dark Shadows," emoting heavily while using sign language to perform the song's lyrics.

So that's cool and interesting and Depp and Portman really do have two of the most compelling faces in the world. But as Spinner reports, they maybe didn't have their signing down quite as well as they should have when the cameras were rolling.

Deaf music fans, including the British Deaf Association, have pointed out that at one point in the clip Depp signs the word "enemy" while attempting "valentine," and later both he and Portman make a mildly embarrassing error, signing the word "tampon" instead of the word "appear."

A spokesperson for the Association said, "The sign for tampon does seem to come up from both Johnny and Natalie, which causes some confusion, especially as American and British sign languages are different."

To be fair, sign is a very subtle-but-specific language and even the slightest changes in motion and/or facial expression can dramatically alter the meaning of something. The organization laments that McCartney did not use actual deaf performers for the clip, but is effusive with praise, regardless of the minor problems, for McCartney, Depp and Portman for "highlighting the use of sign language" in what the org sees as "more a poetic expression" than a sign lesson.

Jack White

By Zachary Swickey

Jack White has been rather busy lately preparing for the release of his first proper solo album, Blunderbuss, on April 24, and his newest endeavor will be streaming a concert live online, which will be directed by legendary actor Gary Oldman (of all people).

The program is going to be the first episode of the third season of the “Unstaged” series put on by American Express, which pairs top music artists with world renowned filmmakers. Oldman will be filming White’s much anticipated concert at Webster Hall in New York City on April 27 (9 p.m. EST), which will be broadcast on VEVO.

The concert will be an album release show of sorts since Blunderbuss will finally hit stores just a few days before the performance.

The “Unstaged” series from American Express has been a huge hit online. The live series has attracted more than 70 million streams with past performances from Coldplay, the Arcade Fire, Mary J. Blige and Duran Duran among others.

Oldman is best known to the masses as Commissioner Gordon in Christopher Nolan's "Batman" films but is an acting legend, having starred in "Leon," "Sid and Nancy," "True Romance," "Air Force One" and countless other films. He even picked up a Best Actor Oscar nomination this year for “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.”

Luckily for White, the actor has some directing experience – he lensed the well-received indie “Nil by Mouth” in 1997.

Oldman will return as Gordon for the third installment of Nolan’s Batman saga, “The Dark Knight Rises,” which hits theaters (and will likely shatter box office records) on July 20.

A new Bob Marley documentary – simply titled “Marley” – will be hitting theaters next Friday (appropriately on 4/20), but the production company has revealed the film will be available to stream on Facebook simultaneous with its theatrical release.

Shangri-La Entertainment, Tuff Gong Pictures and Milyoni touts in a press release that Academy Award-winning director Kevin Macdonald's career-encompassing documentary about the icon will be the first ever U.S. release to be made available for streaming on Facebook the same day it hits theaters.

With the assistance of Milyoni's Social Cinema technology, Facebook users will be able to instantly stream the film from the Bob Marley Facebook page for just $6.99. Currently, over 37 million fans "like" the Bob Marley Facebook page, which easily makes it one of the top 20 most popular pages in the world.

MacDonald has directed many interesting projects over the years: the jaw-dropping mountain survival documentary “Touching the Void” in 2003, Academy Award-nominated “The Last King of Scotland” from 2006, and last year’s “Life in a Day,” which was made entirely from footage culled from YouTube.

A portion of the proceeds from Facebook sales of “Marley” will benefit Save the Children.

“We are delighted that awareness of children's needs will be raised through this innovative effort," said Carolyn Miles, President and CEO of Save the Children, in the release. "We are proud to use funds generated through this on-demand movie release for the children we serve."

"Marley" will also be released through video-on-demand on April 20.

Nice corn rows, James!

There's really not a lot to say about this clip Oscar-nominated actor James Franco posted to his WhoSay account of himself singing Selena Gomez's infectious single "Love You Like a Love Song." The pair are set to co-star in the upcoming "Spring Breakers" – she as one of a quartet of college co-eds who rob a restaurant to finance their spring-break vacation and end up being bailed out by a drug and arms dealer (Franco) who wants them to do some dirty work.

At least we can confirm that they either really enjoyed working together or, you know, the exact opposite and he's gently making fun of her. Who knows? But it's fun. Check it out below!

Bob Dylan

By Zachary Swickey

A film company based out of Brazil has acquired the rights to Bob Dylan’s notorious album Blood on the Tracks and is planning a silver screen adaptation.

The firm, RT Features, is currently on the lookout for an English-language director for the film based on the iconic 1975 album that includes classic jams like “Tangled Up in Blue,” “Buckets of Rain” and “Simple Twist of Fate.”

Fernando Loureiro, senior vice-president of the Brazilian movie company, confirmed the details to AFP reported by industry publication Variety, who said RT Features had bought the album rights from US firm Grey Water Park Productions.

"As longtime admirers of one of the greatest albums in the history of music, we feel privileged to be making this film," RT chief executive Rodrigo Teixeira added.

"Our goal is to work with a filmmaker who can create a classic drama with characters and an environment that capture the feelings that the album inspires in all fans," he continued.

Dylan’s 15th album, Blood on the Tracks is considered by many publications to be one of the greatest of all time, with Rolling Stone listing it at #16 on their much-respected countdown. The album is known for its extremely personal autobiographical nature, reportedly focusing on the dissolution of Dylan’s marriage to Sara Dylan (though Dylan denies it). However, their son Jakob says of the album, “The songs are my parents talking.”

Like Scarlett Johansson, Blake Lively and Christina Hendricks before her, Charlize Theron is in the throes of a scandal caused by hackers … and this time the dreaded cell phone jackers hit the lottery with their discovery of a full-on, ultra crazy sex tape starring the Oscar winner, which they've leaked online!

Say it with me: OMG!

"Oh my God, I’m so nervous. I’ve never made a sex tape before," Theron coos to the camera. "I hope nobody sees this that’s not supposed to see this."

"Move over Paris and Kim cause I’m into some real kinky s**t," she continues, commanding her bondage wear-clad "slaves" to cry and dance for her before tossing hot milk on them while strange music plays in the background and two masked figures watch. "Charlize Theron is burning you with scolding hot milk! Now for the bleeding."

We've obtained a copy of the tape, which is so insane we've embedded it below in the interest of journalism. You will never look at Charlize Theron (who we thought we knew well here in the MTV Newsroom) the same again.

Of course, the whole thing is a ruse for FunnyorDie in honor of that jokiest of holidays – April Fool's Day! Keep your eyes open for practical jokers! Check out her "response" to her cell phone being hacked after the jump. Read More...
