Whitney Houston

By Zachary Swickey

As most fans will recall, earlier this year we lost one of the most important female voices in the history of music. Whitney Houston's untimely passing occurred just 48 hours before the Grammys were to take place, and a new behind-the-scenes documentary will show how the institution dealt with the tragedy.

The film will premiere on June 11 at the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences in North Hollywood with Dave Grohl, LL Cool J and Recording Academy president/CEO Neil Portnow scheduled to attend.

Dubbed "A Death in the Family: The Show Must Go On," the 26-minute documentary is the first film to go behind the curtains of Recording Academy's annual telecast, claims Ken Ehrlich, executive producer of the Grammy Awards.

The new documentary will focus on the 48 hours between late Friday afternoon when performances from Paul McCartney were being rearranged, through the news of Houston’s passing on Saturday, and will include the re-writes necessary for Sunday’s show to go forward following the news.

Interest in how the awards would address the tragedy and honor Houston resulted in the awards earning its second largest viewing audience ever, with 39.9 million people tuning in.

"There was greater interest than normal because of the circumstances, but an awful lot of people want to know about the process," Ehrlich told Billboard. "We never said, 'Let's look back.' It was incredible how much stuff we didn't have because there was little footage other than rehearsals. But we had some B-roll and we lucked out that film crew was following Paul McCartney,” he continued.

Included in the film are this year’s Grammy host, LL Cool J, Dave Grohl of the Foo Fighters, co-producer Terry Lickona, director Louis J. Horvitz, talent producer Chantel Sausedo, Portnow, and Enrlich. They will also all appear together for Q&A session following the screening. David Wild, a Grammy Awards writer, will moderate the session.

Other interviews found in the film include Bruce Springsteen, Jennifer Hudson and Joe Walsh. Expect "A Death in the Family: The Show Must Go On" to be posted on Grammy.com and they are generating plans to have it screened regularly at the Grammy Museum.

"Maybe we've learned something in this process," states Ehrlich. "Maybe we ought to think about doing this every year. We didn't even think about this one until the middle of March."

Whitney Houston

Retail giant Target is pulling a greeting card from its shelves that makes light of the very public troubles the late Whitney Houston faced prior to her death last month.

The card, which was available at Target prior to the singer's untimely and tragic death, reads, "Next time you think of dating the bad boy, consider Whitney Houston. That’s all I’m going to say."

The retailer began receiving complaints shortly after Houston's passing that the card was in poor taste and pulled it from shelves. In a statement, Target said, "It is never our intent to offend guests with the products we offer, and we take feedback from guests very seriously. The card was in our stores prior to Ms. Houston’s death. As soon as this was brought to our attention, we began the process of removing the card from all applicable stores."

Of course, the jokey greeting refers to Houston's relationship with Bobby Brown and the very public problems the relationship brought to her public image and personal well-being.

Do you think greeting card was in poor taste and should have never been stocked by Target in the first place? Let us know in the comments below.

Many were surprised when Aretha Franklin abruptly canceled her planned performance at Whitney Houston's funeral services last weekend, citing difficulty with leg spasms as the reason she could not attend.

The soul legend's absence led some to speculate that she had actually been disinvited from the services by Houston's mother, Cissy Houston, after making some comments on "Today" following Whitney's death that some have construed as a criticism of Cissy, according to Billboard.

"I think parents have to really talk to their children before they leave home ... (that they) leave home prepared, really. She left home with all the right things," Franklin told Al Roker last week.

Franklin, however, is now shooting down those claims in a statement to the Associated Press.

Cissy Houston and I have been longtime friends for almost 50 years. I have four invitations and parking passes that were sent to me for the funeral. Cissy does not need ridiculous speculation and neither do I – particularly at this time. Knowing Cissy as well as I do, I know Whitney left home right and properly. I was generalizing and it was a well-intended statement for any young adult coming into the music industry. I was not speaking of anyone specifically.

Franklin did pay tribute to her goddaughter hours after her funeral at concert at New York's Radio City Music Hall.

On last night's Valentine's episode of "Glee," Mercedes (Amber Riley) sang one of the biggest and best love songs ever, "I Will Always Love You," after her conscience forced her to walk away from Sam (Chord Overstreet). It was a high point in the episode and Twitter immediately lit up with praise…

…Much like it did Sunday night when Jennifer Hudson performed the Dolly Parton-penned ballad as a tribute to the late Whitney Houston on the Grammy Awards.

There's no doubt both performers nailed the song, but their interpretations were a little different – Hudson took a bit more ownership of the track, singing in a lower register, while Riley's delivery and the song's arrangement were nearly identical to Houston's.

With two performances of Houston's signature song in one week, it's hard not to compare the two. But which one was your favorite. Vote in our poll below.

Yesterday, while traveling back to New York City from an all-too-brief visit to Pennsylvania, we passed though Newark, NJ, and started thinking about Whitney Houston, just like we always do when we pass through Newark, the “I Will Always Love You” singer’s hometown.

We wondered what she’s up to, where she’s been lately and if things are going alright. It wasn’t until earlier this morning that we realized Whitney is celebrating a big day: She turns 48 today!

It’s easy to rag on Whitney for the events of recent years – a tour marred by problems, a mediocre album, the public’s perception that her troubles are not as far in the past as she’d like you to believe – but that’s not what we’re going to do today. Instead, let’s take a minute to celebrate the impressive achievements of one of the most legendary performers in the history of music. (Oh, and listen to the tune above for evidence that she still has her hit-making sense about her, regardless of what gossips like to say!) Read More...
