Flaming Lips

By Zachary Swickey

The Flaming Lips had a wild year in 2011 – more wild than usual, that is – releasing new music (often collaborations) every month, concocting a gummy skull with USB drive brain, and rocking out in California’s historic Hollywood Forever Cemetery for a pair of special performances. And now, the group has packaged some of their collabs into a new album: The Flaming Lips and Heady Fwends.

Heady Fwends finds the Flaming Lips hooking up with a diverse group of artists, including Ke$ha, Biz Markie, Chris Martin and Bon Iver, but their new video with electro act New Fumes, “Girl, You're So Weird,” is all anyone is talking about.

The highly NSFW video, which you can see here, features smoke bombs erupting various colors and a bevy of naked ladies roaming around a dark room lit only by colored lights and a shiny disco ball. You can even spot a woman relieving herself on the floor. The video was shot on the fly and cheap in the Flaming Lips’ art gallery in Oklahoma City – the Womb.

Ting Tings

By Zachary Swickey

Cheerleader pop duo the Ting Tings first stole our hearts with their 2008 debut We Started Nothing but it took them four long years – including the scrapping of an album of radio-friendly material in 2010 – to present to us their follow-up, Sounds from Nowheresville, in February.

In an interview with Spinner, frontwoman Katie White explained the effect the band's success has had on her.

"To be honest, I stopped Googling our band when – I think it was on YouTube a year ago – people were having a discussion about how abnormally long my arms were and I was thinking 'I'm gonna get arm issues!' so I stopped," White said.

While the Ting Tings’ debut was well-received by critics and fans alike, the group decided to take a different approach on their sophomore effort.

"We realized we wanted to make an album like a playlist. We felt like it would reflect the way that culture is at the moment, where you're almost greedy,” White continued. “If somebody says to me, 'Oh, check out this new band,' and there's no YouTube video, I feel cheated."

The band had initial plans to release their follow-up in 2010, but decided the material they had recorded sounded too much like generic pop and opted to trash the majority of the tracks – a process they had already gone through with their debut.

"We scrapped a few, which seems to be a big deal to people. We did that on the first album but no one knew or cared. That's how we work. We're kind of quite brutal,” said White.

Considering the nostalgia factor at last weekend’s Coachella, it comes as no surprise that '90s girl bands were a major influence on Sounds from Nowheresville.

"We would literally sit and be like, 'I really liked the Spice Girls and TLC when I was like 15, they were my favorite '90s girl bands. Should we attempt it? Should we do this?' And it was that kind of, 'Should we? No, we probably shouldn't, but we're going to anyway,' feeling that's quite interesting as a writer,” explained White.

It wasn’t too hard for the pop duo to write an album inspired by girl groups from the '90s, but they have a zanier idea that might require more creative effort.

"We half want to do some kind of country album. Just literally sit there and go, 'right, we've got four weeks, let's just write songs and put it out.' We find it fascinating. We hear it constantly on the radio, our driver's just listening to country music. It's amazing 'cause it's so alien to us,” revealed White.

Dave

By Zachary Swickey

Time and time again Twitter casually drops music news gems in our lap, and this time it concerns Dave Grohl being in the studio with some old chums: original Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic and producer Butch Vig.

The three music icons are said to be working on Grohl’s in-the-works documentary on Sound City Studios – the place where Nirvana recorded their worshipped breakthrough effort Nevermind. And for those who don’t recall, Vig is the man responsible for producing that album and making Cobain’s guitar sound not only intelligible, but totally freaking awesome.

Vig let news slip of the little get-together on his Twitter account, writing, “The last 24 hours have been surreal! Had a great gig at the El Rey last night, and spent today recording with Dave, Krist and special guest!”

Unfortunately, we have no word on just who this “guest” might be. The trio also got together not very long ago when they all worked on the last Foo Fighter’s album, 2011’s Wasting Light, which was produced by Vig and featured Novoselic (who contributed bass and accordion on “I Should Have Known"). The Foo Fighters are also expected to begin work on their upcoming eighth studio album later this year.

Also, Vig is taking a break from being a production powerhouse to get back to his musical roots with his act Garbage. The band has reformed and is set to release Not Your Kind of People on May 14. The album will mark their first release since the 2005's Bleed Like Me.

Novoselic on the other hand has dabbled very little in music since the demise of Nirvana. His focus has been on US politics in recent years, leading to a book “Of Grunge and Government: Let's Fix This Broken Democracy.”

Jack White

By Zachary Swickey

Jack White has been rather busy lately preparing for the release of his first proper solo album, Blunderbuss, on April 24, and his newest endeavor will be streaming a concert live online, which will be directed by legendary actor Gary Oldman (of all people).

The program is going to be the first episode of the third season of the “Unstaged” series put on by American Express, which pairs top music artists with world renowned filmmakers. Oldman will be filming White’s much anticipated concert at Webster Hall in New York City on April 27 (9 p.m. EST), which will be broadcast on VEVO.

The concert will be an album release show of sorts since Blunderbuss will finally hit stores just a few days before the performance.

The “Unstaged” series from American Express has been a huge hit online. The live series has attracted more than 70 million streams with past performances from Coldplay, the Arcade Fire, Mary J. Blige and Duran Duran among others.

Oldman is best known to the masses as Commissioner Gordon in Christopher Nolan's "Batman" films but is an acting legend, having starred in "Leon," "Sid and Nancy," "True Romance," "Air Force One" and countless other films. He even picked up a Best Actor Oscar nomination this year for “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.”

Luckily for White, the actor has some directing experience – he lensed the well-received indie “Nil by Mouth” in 1997.

Oldman will return as Gordon for the third installment of Nolan’s Batman saga, “The Dark Knight Rises,” which hits theaters (and will likely shatter box office records) on July 20.

Rihanna, Twitter

Pop princess Rihanna swept into Indio, California and the Coachella Music Festival Friday without saying a word. Instead, she posted a series of fun-in-the-sun pics to her Twitter, hinting that she was in town to enjoy the show … and maybe join one of her many superstar collaborators that were set to play the festival.

Though she mostly laid low (for her!), Rihanna finally stepped up to the plate yesterday evening to join her "We Found Love" producer Calvin Harris' high-octane set in the Sahara Dance Tent. Before the sun had even set, Rihanna emerged about halfway through Harris' smokin' dance set to join him for her latest single "Where Have You Been" and her unstoppable hit "We Found Love."

Taylor Momsen

By James Dinh

NEW YORK – It was three hours since show time on Friday (April 13) and the crowd at the Irving Plaza had grown impatient. Even though the strikingly blue-lit venue had been appetized by the likes of opening acts The Parlor Mob, The Blackboard Nails and The Hollywood Kills, the jam-packed crowd were ready for The Pretty Reckless.

Irving's lights shaded black and each of the four-member act individually took to the stage for their latest "The Medicine Tour" show, but the obvious avalanche of applause was for Taylor Momsen, the 18-year-old actress-turned-rocker. In a matching black dress, jacket and knee-high spiked boots, the frontwoman took hold of the mic and began what would be a 12-song set that would further erase any remnants of her former good girl-turned-bad-turned-good character on "Gossip Girl," beginning with the band's first tune, "Hit Me Like A Man," the same title as their recently-released EP.

Beyond the opening number, Momsen and company flew through a string of songs off their debut LP, Light Me Up, including "Since You've Gone," Miss Nothing," and "Just Tonight."

"Been around the f**cking world and there's no place like New York City," a smokey-eyed Momsen shouted to the crowd.

Like the attention she garners from her famous fashion sense, Momsen kept the audience riled as she tousled her platinum blonde mane, shimmied in her tight dress and, of course, got a little dirty with her mic stand during "Goin' Down." Momsen ventured out of Pretty Reckless territory momentarily mid-show to take on a cover of System of a Down's "Aerials," but her crowd engagement during "My Medicine" proved a show highlight. Strapped with a guitar and cracking a contagious smile, the singer made the hallways of Irving Plaza echo as her "zombies" took turns in chanting the new single, followed by crowd pleasers "Make Me Wanna Die" and "Factory Girl."

Before you knew it, Reckless had near completed their hour-long set, but not before giving the crowd time to catch their breath with an encore of the mellow cut "Nothing Left To Lose," where Taylor reminisces about a relationship with an older man. In just one night, Momsen, barely a year older than the legal age, emphasized her rock showmanship, upstaging many of her teen counterparts in the industry. Sure, we loved her on "Gossip Girl," but Taylor seems to have found her lane in music.

MTV News chatted with Momsen before she hit the stage about her currently nonexistent acting career as well as the one horror film mastermind that might persuade her back into the studio. "It was a pretty big part of my life, pretty much my whole life. I started it at 2," she explained about her early film gigs. "But I'm certainly not looking to do any projects anytime soon, unless Rob Zombie calls. Then that would be cool."

Lady gaga

Get ready to be amazed!

Three Ithaca College a cappella groups (Ithacappella, Premium Blend & IC VoiceStream) have teamed up with Pentatonix, winners of NBC's reality competition "The Sing-Off," to record an absolutely unbelievable version of Lady Gaga's empowerment anthem "Born this Way" for charity … and while you might think you hear synths and other instrumentation on the sample below, you'd be wrong, it's all a cappella. Listen:

The song is available on iTunes with the proceeds being equally divided between Gaga’s anti-bullying Born This Way Foundation and the NYC's Ali Forney Center, the nation's largest organization serving homeless LGBT youth.

Last summer, after making a series of anti-gay remarks at a comedy show in Nashville, "30 Rock" star Tracy Morgan visited the Ali Forney Center to speak with homeless LGBT youth about the issues we face, and later that same day, MTV News had the opportunity to talk to Carl Siciliano, the head of the Ali Forney Center, and Jayden, a homeless teen helped by the facility, about Morgan's visit and the difficulties gay teens face from bullies and unaccepting families.

Both Gaga's Born This Way Foundation and the Ali Forney Center are hard at work trying to make things better for LGBT youth. So listen to the amazing "BTW" cover above and if you are into it, check it out at iTunes to support a good cause.

Our girl Hilary Duff is loving the family life and posted an adorable new picture of herself, husband Mike Comrie and baby Luca to her Twitter this morning. Check it out:

Hilary Duff, Twitter

Since becoming a mom, Duff has been hitting Twitter hard with all sorts of mommy-related advice and observations that make us believe she's probably going to expand her empire into the baby realm – think Stuff by Hilary Duff baby clothes, bottles and blankets – and since she's already an author, we wouldn't be surprised if her next heroine is a mama on a mission.

And lest you think baby Luca is going to keep Hilary out of the studio, think again. She told MTV News' own Christina Garibaldi that after a few months getting her mama on, she'll be ready to get back in the studio and maybe even hit the road for a tour.

"Before I got pregnant I was really starting to work on a new record," Duff told MTV News. "I want to have a few months with my baby, and then I think maybe touring with a baby could be easy."

We have to admit that we never would have guessed Coca-Cola would be trying to piggyback on the iconography of Madonna, but that seems to be the case with a new Diet Coke bottle design that sports a cone bra in a strange yet unmistakable ode to the Queen of Pop.

Diet Coke is changing things up with a new line of fashion-centric bottle designs, one of which happens to draw undeniable inspiration from Madonna’s notorious cone bra outfit from her 1990 "Blond Ambition" tour.

If you’re wondering how in the world this came into existence, famous French fashion designer Jean Paul Gaultier is the man responsible for creating Madge’s outfit – a mainstay in music-fashion pop culture – and was interestingly appointed as a creative director for Diet Coke.

>>> Madonna's Truth Or Dare Fragrance '15 Or 16 Years' In The Making

The Madonna-inspired bottle design is a cream color and dons a fishnet corset and cone bra as well as a touch of white and blue stripes painted on. The product has no official tie to the singer, but the audience they’re speaking to is quite clear.

This isn’t the first time Coca-Cola has partnered up with an icon in the fashion industry. Karl Lagerfeld and even Dolce and Gabbana have contributed to the soda brand.

However, if you live in the states and are hoping to get your hands on one of the bottles you're out of luck – the product is for a European-only campaign. But if you're willing, you’ll probably be able to pick some up off eBay … though you'll most likely end up paying major bucks.

April is undoubtedly a great month for music. On top of Coachella kicking the festival season off, April also has Record Store Day (4/21) and just so happens to also be Public Radio Music Month (PRRM). Artists from just about every genre – including the Black Keys, Dave Matthews, the Roots, the Civil Wars, the Decemberists and Jack White – have even show their support with an open love letter of sorts to public radio.

For those of you not in the know, public radio is a great place to discover new bands and artists. NPR, for example, frequently gives album sneak previews and first listens with some of the best indie and mainstream bands around.

A wealth of notable artists have signed their name to the open love letter to public radio, which essentially reads like a list of heartfelt “thanks you’s.”

“Thank you for taking chances. Thank you for playing our music even when – especially when – it doesn’t sound like everything else on the radio dial,” the letter begins.

Quite the appropriate statement since I can personally recall hearing White Stripes first single “Hotel Yorba” from their breakout album White Blood Cells on public radio months before the band started to blow up with their following single, “Fell in Love with a Girl.”

“Thank you for inviting us into your studios and asking us intelligent questions. Thank you for introducing us to some of the most important music in our lives, music that made us who we are,” the letter continues, before signing off, “Thanks, public radio, for being who you are. Happy Public Radio Music Month.”

Throughout the tough times, the music community has always come together to support public radio, which inspired NPR, local radio stations and musicians across the county to spend April spotlighting how non-commercial radio supports all the different genres of the music community – even less mainstream fare like jazz, bluegrass and classical.

Select radio stations will have special events in celebration: WFPK in Louisville will host a PRMM interview with Chris Walla, guitarist for Death Cab for Cutie; WFUV in New York City will air a live broadcast of Rodrigo y Gabriela from Radio City Music Hall; and KOPB in Portland, Oregon, will have Decemberists bassist Nate Query hosting as guest DJ.

You can tune into the airwaves of your own public radio stations across America or join the fun online at their website as it will be a month-long celebration of public radio’s vital role in our nation’s musical life.
