Ellie Goulding

By Zachary Swickey

British songbird – and the apple of Skrillex’s eyeEllie Goulding has been working on her much-anticipated second album and we've just learned it will finally be released in October with the title Halcyon, according to NME.

The follow-up to Goulding’s well-received 2010 debut Lights is set to drop on October 8 following the release of the effort’s lead single, “Anything Could Happen,” on September 30.

Goulding recorded her sophomore release with notable producer Jim Elliot (Kylie Minogue). Red-hot DJ/producer Calvin Harris also reportedly hit the studio with Goulding, but it’s not known if those sessions will make the cut for the album.

Fans got their very first taste of new material earlier this month when Goulding released a cover of Active Child’s “Hanging On,” which features guest vocals courtesy of Brit rapper Tinie Tempah.

It’s also unclear whether Goulding’s session with boyfriend Skrillex and Swedish House Mafia members Sebastian Ingrosso and Steve Angello will be included on the set. At the time, Ingrosso wasn’t so sure if it would end up on Goulding’s album or somewhere else entirely: “I think it's going to be for [Ellie's] album, but in this business you don't know until you see it on iTunes,” he told Billboard.

Ingrosso also said of the collab, “We made a demo and it was amazing. We had a blast. Ellie is a great artist … her voice is amazing. Skillex, enough said, he is Skrillex.”

For those of you who haven't yet recovered from the excitement of last week’s big Mariah Carey news, get ready—the singer has just released the cover art (below) for her new single "Triumphant (Get ‘Em)" featuring Rick Ross and Meek Mill as well as a photo of herself on the set of the song’s music video.

The endlessly entertaining star took to Twitter with a visual teaser of her upcoming track, announcing to fans, “On the set of the TRIUMPHANT (Get ‘Em) video shoot. Get ready for a triumphant week, we have surprises every day!” Accompanying the tweet was a photo of Mariah lounging on a couch in true diva fashion. She followed up with a picture of the single’s cover and the message “Here's the cover of my new single #Triumphant!! World premiere this Thursday, Aug 2. GET 'EM!”

Speaking of triumphant weeks, the singer inked a deal last Monday to replace Jennifer Lopez as a judge on the next season of "American Idol." Based on our knowledge of what happens when Mariah Carey is combined with live television, we’re pretty sure this season will be a must-see.

The singer recently explained the song’s origins via Twitter, posting “I wrote TRIUMPHANT when I was going through a difficult time & it helped me get through it. When u hear it, pay attention 2 the lyrics.”

With the single set for an early-August release, we can’t wait to see what other triumphs lay in store for the inordinately talented and unpredictably amusing diva.

Fiona Apple

By Zachary Swickey

HOLLYWOOD – in a lot of ways, Fiona Apple is not all that different from Leonardo DiCaprio, who seems to be one of the only actors in Hollywood today that embodies the vintage charm of yesteryear cinema. Likewise Apple is a rare gem in today’s music scene and would’ve fit in perfectly in the musical heyday of Jimi Hendrix, Janis Jopin and John Lennon. She showcased this wonderfully Sunday night (July 29) at the Hollywood Palladium.

The show marked Apple’s final performance on the first leg of the tour behind her recently released The Idler Wheel…. Backed by a four-piece band and eight multi-color lights that resembled oversized living room lamps, Apple kicked things off for a sold-out crowd of over 4,000 adoring fans – including “Knocked Up” director Judd Apatow – on the piano with the lively, erratic number “Fast As You Can” from her heralded ’99 effort When the Pawn….

>> Fiona Apple Reveals Battle With Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder

As soon as the song ended, Apple apologized for her slight, 30-minute tardiness. “I’m sorry I was late. I don’t really have an excuse… I was just nervous,” she coyly admitted.

Fans erupted into cheers as Apple began tickling the ivories to “Shadow Boxer” – a classic track from her debut ’96 album Tidal. Surprisingly, the set was five songs in before any Idler Wheel material was played – the first song being “Anything We Want,” which received a warm, enthusiastic response. A casual fan wouldn’t have even known it’s a newer song since everyone sang along to every word.

“Sleep to Dream” was a particular treat as Apple – donning a lovely violet dress and red scarf – got up from her piano to front the microphone. The song featured a rather out-of-nowhere guitar solo that was exceptionally awesome and unexpected as the guitarist shredded away with insane technical precision. Apple’s female drummer had the mannerisms of the Black Keys’ Patrick Carney and the keyboardist bore a striking resemblance to Jim James of My Morning Jacket (hey, maybe they’re cousins?).

>> Whoops! NME Runs Picture Of Alanis Morissette With Review Of Fiona Apple's New Album

The night’s set was particularly light on material from Apple’s amazing 2005 album Extraordinary Machine. However, the when she finally performed the album’s title track, it could not have been more beautiful. The song had a more lullaby-esque charm to it as Apple seemed to channel the scene in “Snow White” where she sings to the birds in the most angelic of voices.

Apple showed some more love for her newest album by performing a somber-but-moving rendition of “Werewolf” and a lively, rockin’ version of “Daredevil,” which had her providing additional percussion with a deep, bass-y floor tom.

>> Fiona Apple Reveals New Idler Wheel Track ' Werewolf'

The slowest moment of the night came during “I Know,” which showcased Apple’s soulful soothing coo. Unsurprisingly, “Criminal” may have gotten the loudest response from the crowd, but it was the night’s closing number – a cover of Conway Twitty’s “It’s Only Make Believe” – that was the most magical moment of the show.

The second leg of Apple’s lengthy tour kicks off September 9 in San Jose, California. Do yourself a favor and witness her amazing performance if she comes through your town.

Cher has been working on her new album for a very long time. It's been a year since we learned that she and Lady Gaga had recorded the Red One-produced duet "The Greatest Thing" for the record. The song was supposed to drop in the fall of last year, but has yet to see the light of day. Despite some strange back-and-forth over the song, Cher has insisted it will appear on her forthcoming album – her first since 2001's Living Proof – and if that's the case, we now know when we'll finally get a taste of the anticipated track.

The music legend took to Twitter late last night (July 29) to reveal that the still-untitled set should hit stores "near Xmas" and that the first single drops in October.

"The Greatest Thing" is not expected to be the first single off the album. Instead, Cher has been singing the praises of an as-yet-unnamed track that is "as good as 'Believe,'" the Euro dance-pop smash that dominated the singles charts in 1999.

She also tweeted several pictures of the ongoing recording sessions for the album. Check them out below!

Deftones

By Zachary Swickey

LOS ANGELES – Few rock bands that emerged during the '90s nu-metal phase still exist today and practically none have the amount of respect and admiration the Deftones receive from their musical peers. Countless bands cite the Sacramento-based group as a big influence on their music.

Saturday night (July 28) the Deftones stopped by the Troubadour in Los Angeles – an incredibly tiny, sweaty 300-capacity club – to perform their first proper show in nearly a year and their only solo date before heading out on a co-headlining amphitheater tour with System of a Down prior to their new, still-untitled album dropping on October 9. SOAD drummer John Dolmayan and bassist Shavo Odadjian were both in attendance, enjoying the set alongside Dillinger Escape Plan frontman Greg Puciato.

The Deftones took no time dusting off the cobwebs as they erupted straight into “Rocket Skates” – one of the heavier numbers off their last release, 2010’s Diamond Eyes - with fans chanting along to frontman Chino Moreno’s every note, scream and shrill as he shouted, “Guns! Razors! Knives!”

After the title track from their last effort, fans got their first taste of nostalgia with the 'Tones’ classic ’98 tracks “My Own Summer (Shove It)” and “Be Quiet and Drive (Far Away)."

A highlight of the night was the band world premiering a new song, “Roller Derby,” live. The tune kicks right in and even features a hand clap-friendly moment, which has up until now been absent in Deftones material. It’s definitely one of their more rapid-fire, maniacal numbers with some excellent tricky drum work courtesy of Abe Cunningham – not to mention Stephen Carpenter’s sludgy guitar and Sergio Vega’s dirty bass line on the track.

Next, they brought out yet another new song, “Rosemary,” that was more mellow along the lines of their White Pony material and featured Moreno donning the guitar, something he does on nearly every track of their upcoming new album, which is a first.

The band went old-school for their two-song encore and fans couldn’t have been more thankful as they erupted into “Root” off their album debut, Adrenaline, which features one of the band’s most memorable riffs. For their finale, they busted out arguably the fan-favorite, “7 Words,” before bidding the sweat-soaked crowd goodnight.

The Deftones kick-off their tour with System of a Down on August 4 in Philadelphia before their upcoming album drops via Warner Bros. Records.

On Day 2 of Boom, Belgium’s Tomorrowland Festival, a majority of the day’s 60,000 attendees sought out the Main Stage as the evening let on into night. Boom hometown stars Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike gave way to bass music king Skrillex, who put on an explosive, seizure inducing light spectacle, and even had a fireworks display that quickened in tempo with his music.

It goes without saying that with their remaining days together now numbered, a major draw for the weekend was the return of the Holy Trinity of House, Swedish House Mafia. And indeed Axwell, Sebastian Ingrosso and Steve Angello recently confirmed to MTV News UK, that they too were looking forward to their return to Boom, and a chance to play one more, likely final, time for their fans. Yes, as you’ll see in the clip below, Swedish House Mafia has nothing but love for Tomorrowland.

"The Festival is getting better and better every year," Seb said. "And the crowd is coming from all over the world."

"Great production. Great artists," Steve added.

"Great guys behind the festival," Seb continued, referencing Tomorrowland’s promoters, ID&T

"I think it’s one of the few festivals where the promoters work very closely with the DJs and performers to make it the best they can," Steve concluded.

While a late evening shower may have dampened the ground at the launch of Boom, Belgium’s Tomorrowland Festival, the magic of the day wasn’t hindered by it in the very least. If anything, the 60,000 fans in attendance Friday probably welcomed the cool down.

Banging sets by Joachim Garraud & Clockwork, coupled with the ecstatic raging of a few thousand fans, turned Steve Aoki’s tented Dim Mak stage into a sauna. Of course, when rapper Lil Jon walked out and "Welcomed all the ladies and gentlemen" to Tomorrowland, before launching into "Turbulence," mayhem ensued. And speaking of raging – notable in Aoki’s set – festival goers were treated to a brand spanking new bomber of a collab with Knife Party. Fittingly, when we left Dim Mak for the day, Indonesian rising star Angger Dimas (who revealed to MTV News that a brand new Boys Will Be Boys track with Tiësto is coming soon) had just launched into "Internet Friends."

Electronic music trio Above & Beyond hosted their own "Group Therapy" stage on Friday, and among the roster of performers were 24-year old Israeli producer Matt Zo and Aussie producer Jaytech: two guys Tony & Jono revealed are "THE GUYS" that inspire them today. Before the end of our chat, the gents reminded us that Jaytech’s got a new album on the way with a departure in sound, making the switch from their Anjunadeep to Anjunabeats label. Veterans Gabriel & Dresden closed down "Group Therapy" with gusto.

Michael Jackson

By Zachary Swickey

The Jackson family has descended into an increasingly chaotic and public battle over everything from the late Michael Jackson's will and guardianship of his three children to allegations that family matriarch Katherine Jackson was kidnapped by her own children. But who would’ve ever thought that LaToya would emerge as the sane one?

La Toya, who is known for attention-seeking and sometimes bizarre public behavior, has remained uncharacteristically quiet during the ordeal, and now, she is reportedly encouraging her family to stop airing their dirty laundry in public because she feels the ongoing dispute is damaging the family name.

TMZ says that she feels the best way to resolve the family’s problems is in private behind closed doors and not in the public eye. (Seems pretty obvious, right? But this is the Jackson family we're talking about.)

While we don't know what is going on behind the scenes, it has been made public that Katherine Jackson has been stripped of guardianship of Michael's children and a Los Angeles judge has appointed TJ Jackson as the new temporary guardian. In addition, Janet, Randy, Jermaine and Rebbie Jackson fired off an angry letter to the executors of Michael's estate, accusing them of, among other things, fraud and threatening legal action.

If you’re wondering whose side La Toya is taking, she’s definitely not siding with siblings Janet, Randy, Jermaine and Rebbie. She reportedly wasn’t fond of them appearing on television all week.

We tip our hat to La Toya for wanting what is best for Michael’s kids and trying to end the public spectacle her family is going through.

Carly Rae

By Bryant Gilmore

When you’ve been training as hard as the U.S. Olympic Swim Team, what do you do to blow off a little steam? Turn on the camera, crank up the iPod and make a parody video of Carly Rae Jepsen's "Call Me Maybe," of course.

Yes, the infectious summer hit and lightning rod for endless viral videos, has added another to the list and it features our Olympic hopefuls lounging and laughing poolside, hanging out in hotel rooms and laying down some dance moves, including a sweet underwater Robot as they bust out the lyrics to the song. It’s both hilarious and refreshing to see what the athletes engage in normal activity during their downtime.

One of the standout moments in the video comes at 1:04 when the ladies rise from their seats on an airplane to tackle the second verse of the song. Call us crazy, but we didn’t see the No Seat Belts sign go off, allowing them to do that, but when you’re going for Olympic gold on behalf of the entire country, we guess the TSA overlooks some things.

Good luck in London, guys. We’ll be watching, cheering you on and looking out for the next awesome parody. Maybe something set to, hopefully, "We Are The Champions," next time? In the meantime, check out the video below:
