Well, that was certainly unexpected. In a twist that seemed to come from nowhere, former "The Hills" star Audrina Patridge was eliminated from Tuesday night's (October 26) episode of "Dancing With the Stars." Though she has been struggling all season long with infusing her technically sharp moves with energy and personality, it seemed as though her technique would carry her through at least a few more weeks. But clearly the viewing audience decided that they had seen enough, and despite the fact that several contestants had lower scores (including former Super Bowl MVP Kurt Warner and former accidental political talking point Bristol Palin), Patridge was shown the door.

Apparently, the show narrowly missed what would have been a truly staggering upset, as judges' favorite and front-runner Jennifer Grey was also declared to be in danger of elimination on Tuesday night's show. Though her momentum has cooled a bit in the past two weeks, Grey remains the most elite competitor on the show this season, and with the fundamentally sound Patridge out, it is now a two horse race between Grey and Brandy for the grand prize. (As an aside: As a competitor who has solid technical skills but lacked flair, isn't Audrina sort of like the Chuck Knoblauch of "Dancing With the Stars"?)

With the twist of Patridge's exit and the uncertainty of Grey's status, Tuesday night's results show was lively and tense, so the addition of the musical guests was (for once) a welcome respite and not just a way to fill time. Kylie Minogue brought an incredible amount of heat to the stage, and the cameos by rock legends (including Brett Michaels and Alice Cooper) were refreshing and fun. But now that the entire MTV contingent is gone (Patridge follows "Jersey Shore" star Mike "The Situation" Sorrentino, who was eliminated two weeks ago), the favorite around the MTV Newsroom is now Brandy, if only because everybody here still knows all the words to "I Wanna Be Down."

Over the course of most seasons of "Dancing With the Stars," this is the point in the season where the competition really gets serious. Theoretically, every cast member left should have a fighting chance at competing in the finale, with a handful of people truly capable of winning the whole thing. But though plenty of dead weight has been shed so far this season, there is still at least one contestant who is just treading water until her inevitable dismissal (probably as soon as this week). We're looking at you, Bristol Palin, and your strange "teen activist" title and your inability to move your feet properly. Palin was saved from the chopping block last week in favor of Florence Henderson, and she was going to really need a stellar showing on Monday night's (October 25) episode of "Dancing With the Stars" in order to continue shaking her tailfeather on national television.

She may have actually bought herself another week with her tango last night, a relatively lively performance during an extremely strange rock-themed episode of the show that also featured a strange "dance marathon" that was confusing and not particularly noteworthy (except for the fact that Brandy won it somehow). Palin began to emerge from her shell last night, and her footwork was the strongest it has been all season (that being said, she still could use a lot of polish). Her confident performance — combined with Kurt Warner's relatively disastrous night on the dance floor — should give Palin a reprieve and could start her on the path to becoming this season's Kelly Osbourne (as in the contestant who starts as a mess and eventually challenges for the title).

However, she'll have to overcome some stiff competition from Brandy (who is getting exponentially better every week), Jennifer Grey (who has been judged a little more harshly if only because she's sort of a ringer) and former "The Hills" star Audrina Patridge (whose paso doble still lacked personality but showed an impressive range of technical skills). Rick Fox also continues to come on strong, which gives the top tier some much-needed testosterone.

Mike "The Situation" Sorrentino — the star of "Jersey Shore" and the inspiration for this feature — may have shaken his tailfeather for the last time on "Dancing With the Stars," but that doesn't mean there is no longer a reason to watch. In fact, the Situation's exit makes way for a far more compelling story line in the early success of former "The Hills" star Audrina Patridge, who has spent the first few weeks of the competition delivering consistent good (and typically underrated) performances that are extremely technically sound and lacking only in character and delivery. As Monday night's (October 18th) new episode proved, the real battle for supremacy is still between Jennifer Grey and Brandy, but the focus of the rest of the season could be whether or not Patridge is able to step up her performance game and make herself into a force who can win this whole thing.

She acquitted herself well last night, but ran into the same kinds of speed bumps as before. Her rumba was sharp and entertaining enough, but the judges again demanded more passion and performance from her. That has been a consistent complaint from the panel for the entirety of the season so far, and it's quite possible that Patridge is beginning to try their patience. Still, it's hard to argue with her moves, which are fluid and graceful. Plus, her bikini and robe get-up certainly didn't hurt her.

The rest of the show saw two more great performances from Grey and Brandy, while Rick Fox and Kurt Warner represented well for the athlete contingent (Fox seems to be getting especially good and could threaten the top of the heap in a few weeks). At the bottom of the list, Bristol Palin came in as the straggler now that the Situation had exited, and her performance — which featured her dressed as a gorilla for reasons nobody could quite figure out — did her no favors. Though Florence Henderson's delivery was also pretty middling, it seems unlikely that the country will send one of television's favorite mothers home, which means that it's back to Alaska (and motherhood) for Palin.

"We are working on the Argentine tango this week, and it's sensual and complicated. I'm giving it 150 percent because I'm determined to maintain, or beat, our scores from last week. [Fans] should expect to see me and Tony doing a very fun tango. I can't reveal the song or my costume just yet — but you'll love it."

-Former "The Hills" star and current "Dancing With the Stars" front-runner Audrina Patridge, previewing her next performance on the hit dancing competition show. Patridge will go up against the other remaining contestants on Monday night's (October 11) episode of the show. She has so far fared extremely well on the show, regularly posting excellent scores and creating essentially a two-horse race between herself and former "Dirty Dancing" star Jennifer Grey. Patridge is not the only MTV star competing on the show, as "Jersey Shore" breakout Mike "The Situation" Sorrentino is also in the mix, and though his initial scores were weak, he has shown improvement recently.

In the meantime, Patridge still has an uphill battle, as the competition remains fierce and she is also battling an injury. "I sprained my ankle last week, so I have been trying to elevate and ice it when I can and be extra careful not to further injure myself," she told MTV News' Jocelyn Vena via e-mail. "Right now, I'm just pushing past the pain, because I want to win! I can't afford to miss out on any rehearsals at this point." And though the dancing is fast and furious, she has found the time to bond with some of the other participants. "I see Jennifer Grey and Bristol Palin a lot. We seem to be on a similar rehearsal schedule," she said. "They are both so sweet. Jennifer gives me tons of great advice — she really is such a nurturing person. I love her. Bristol is very sweet too. She's really coming out of her shell, and learning how to be a performer."

The latest season of "Dancing With the Stars" features perhaps the most truly star-studded cast in the history of the program, including two homegrown MTV stars: "The Hills" breakout Audrina Patridge and "Jersey Shore" centerpiece Mike "The Situation" Sorrentino. It's the latter the MTV Newsroom Blog is most excited about, so while you can check out full recaps and analysis over at the main MTV News page, this space will be dedicated to tracking the advancement of New Jersey's favorite new philosopher.

While the Situation's near-elimination during last week's run through "Dancing With the Stars" kept him on camera explaining his lack of preparation time and his willingness to improve, his relative safety this week kept him in the cast but not necessarily on the show as much. The narrative of Tuesday night's results show settled on Michael Bolton, his low-scoring performance from Monday and his insistence that judge Bruno Tonioli was "inappropriate and disrespectful" while giving Bolton notes (to which Tonioli cattily responded, "Fox is always waiting").

It wasn't completely smooth sailing for the Situation, who was the last dancer to be declared safe before Bolton was given the boot (Brandy and Rick Fox had both been on the bubble earlier in the episode). Ever the classy competitor, the Situation made sure to respectfully shake hands with a clearly disappointed Bolton. Sportsmanship!

The results episode was fleshed out with a performance by Janelle Monae, some confessions about pre-show rituals from some of the professional dancers (one refrigerates his socks, another puts hand sanitizer under her armpits for reasons never adequately explained) and a song by Seal. Once again, the Situation finds himself in survival mode, as he will probably be the assumed first-to-go next week should he turn in another mediocre performance.

The bad news first: Mike "The Situation" Sorrentino's second week on "Dancing With the Stars" did not go all that much better than his first. Charged with pulling off a quickstep, he certainly seemed committed and enthusiastic, but his moves still lack polish and finesse, which will continue to hurt him. But the good news is that the judges recognized his improvement (however slight) and awarded his dance a totally respectable 18 points. That puts him right in the meaty part of the curve on an episode that saw no dancers score higher than 24 (and even that score earned a chorus of boos, for some reason).

The Situation finds himself in good shape, especially considering the dreadful scores for Michael Bolton (dude only picked up 12 points, including a three from one judge) and another unexceptional performance from Margaret Cho. That should all add up to an easy pass to the next round, where he will no doubt continue to improve (even despite the fact that he is apparently pigeon-toed, which will certainly get in the way of precision footwork).

On the other end of the spectrum, Audrina Patridge certainly had the best week of anybody. Her dancing was sharp and she was full of charisma. Even her costume stood head-and-shoulders above everybody else on the show. "Dirty Dancing" alum Jennifer Grey may have gotten the best scores of the night, but through two weeks, Patridge has established herself as the most worthy challenger in the field and a good bet to beat Grey at her own game.

Though we don't yet know who their partners will be (which, let's face it, is an important factor in deciding who can win and who can't), the celebrity contestants for the new season of "Dancing With the Stars" have been announced. Ever since the launch of the show back in 2005, it has evolved from a charming summer replacement show into one of the most popular reality programs on television.

At this point, they've figured out exactly how to cast these things. In fact, you can even tell how everybody is going to finish based on the role each person plays in the cast. Check out the predictions below.

The Ringer
Role: The professional performer (usually a musician with some kind of dance background) who provides the gold standard for the rest of the contestants. These people are usually the finalists.
Past Versions: Mya, Nick Lachey, Nicole Scherzinger, Aaron Carter
This Year's Model: Brandy. As Mya proved, a little R&B pedigree goes a long way.

The Football Player
Role: Twofold. First, for the sheer hilarity of seeing huge guys doing the cha cha. And second, to (theoretically) get men interested in the show. These guys tend to overachieve because of a combination of the above.
Past Versions: Emmitt Smith, Jerry Rice, Jason Taylor, Warren Sapp
This Year's Model: Kurt Warner. Expect the quarterback to get pretty deep into this one.

The Other Athlete
Role: To prove that athletic prowess doesn't necessarily translate into greatness on the dance floor.
Past Versions: Clyde Drexler, Floyd Mayweather, Chuck Liddell
This Year's Model: Rick Fox. Considering the guy retired from NBA competition with bad knees, his chances are not great.

The Athlete Who Is Actually A Ringer
Role: To fool you into thinking there isn't a second ringer on the show. These people tend to win outright.
Past Versions: Kristi Yamaguchi, Apolo Anton Ohno, Shawn Johnson, Helio Castroneves
This Year's Model: Change the word "athlete" to "actress," and you've got Jennifer Grey.

The Old Person
Role: To prove that age ain't nothin' but a number (except when it keeps you from winning, save for one case). Read More...

Audrina PatridgeIf Stephanie Pratt was hoping that her new sister-in-law, Heidi Montag, would make time to hang out with all her favorite lady besties now that she's married, she must have been seriously disappointed at the Nylon Magazine Young Hollywood Issue Party in Los Angeles last night. But to make up for Speidi's absence, everyone from Rumer Willis to Nicky Hilton to Kelly Osbourne was there.

(Flip through pics from the Nylon party here.)

Also on hand were Stephanie's BFFs and "Hills" co-stars Lo Bosworth and Audrina Patridge (wearing the same shoes that Kelly Clarkson rocks in her "I Do Not Hook Up" music video) all decked out in their best party gear. The ladies were all smiles as they partied with hotties like "Twilight" vamp Kellan Lutz and his "90210" co-star Ryan Eggold.

Although Lo and Rumer rocked all black, ladies like Nicky Hilton, Stephanie and Audrina all threw in a splash of color with their looks. But we're a little confused by Kelly Osbourne, who showed up to the party with a blond pixie cut that matched boyfriend Luke Worrall's. Note to Kelly: Couples should only match their feelings for one another, not their hairstyles.

Last night, most of the "Hills" cast attended an event at the Paley Center for Media, where their show was honored. A certain couple did not make the event, however, presumably because they're putting the finishing touches on their weekend wedding plans. The rest of the cast were all about discussing Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt's forthcoming nuptials, although no one seems to know yet what they're wearing.

At this event's red carpet, all the "Hills" girls were looking as glam as always. Audrina wore a one-shoulder number with her hair up, revealing the colorful tattoo on the back of her neck. Whitney left her "City" life to be in L.A., wearing an almost nude T-back dress. Lauren showed off her deep tan with a sunny yellow number that was tied off with a leather belt. Lo's aqua-and-cobalt ensemble was a colorful addition to the carpet, but how did she feel about Stephanie's very similar aqua and black look? Hmm … (Check out photos of the girls after the jump, plus browse the entire Paley Center event photo gallery.) Read More...

Audrina Patridge
All over MTV today, we've been wondering about the end game for "The Hills" with series co-star Audrina Patridge. Will there be a season five? Will there be a "Hills" movie?

We admit, though, that there is one possibility we don't even dare to consider, because the mere idea is so undeniably awesome: a "Hills" movie starring James Franco and Mila Kunis instead of L.C., Heidi and Audrina.

For the uninitiated, during the writers strike early this year, Franco and Kunis filmed a spoof for FunnyOrDie.com, in which they imagined a world without scripts. They read a transcript from "The Hills," with Kunis standing in for Patridge and Franco for her sometimes boyfriend Justin Bobby. The spot was hilarious, mostly due to the fact that the pair were mocking the "Hills" duo.

Later, Franco even laughingly told MTV News that he had so much fun filming the takedown that he wants a whole Justin Bobby movie.
