As far as I’m concerned it’s still 1999. That’s the year the greatest song in pop music made its debut. In April of that year, my boos, the Backstreet Boys, dropped their first single off their Y2k-themed Millennium. The track, “I Want It That Way,” changed the scope of pop music at the time, which had favored cheese over substance. It was deeper, more meaningful and definitely impactful.

The chart-topping, Grammy-nominated tune landed at #10 on the MTV/Rolling Stone magazine-curated list of "100 Greatest Pop Songs Of All Time.” Written and produced by pop demi-god Max Martin (along with fellow Swede Andreas Carlsson and Kristian Lundin), the song quickly became a “TRL” and Top 40 radio staple.

The video itself was a more mature look at the five guys in the band. The Wayne Isham-directed clip was actually pretty simple, given the complex heartache of the track. The sun-drenched video just followed the guys through an airport. As the song crescendos, the guys are met by screaming excited fans holding up handmade signs, a scene they regularly encountered in 1999. (I know, I was there.) That year, the video was up for 4 VMAs and eventually took home the Moonman for Viewer’s Choice. (It probably should have won all of them in retrospect.)

In fact, it was so great and so popular that it was later parodied by the very funny guys of Blink-182 for their “All The Small Things” clip, released later that same year.

So hit “play” and party like it’s 1999 all over again.

Last year, the New Kids on the Block and Backstreet Boys combined their boy-band superpowers for the incomparable spectacle that was the NKOTBSB Tour, which saw the guys tearing up stadiums and arenas across the U.S. with tracks like "I Want It That Way," "Step by Step" and the groups' joint track, "Don't Turn Out the Lights."

The nine guys will once again hit the road this spring, taking their act to Europe and elsewhere for the next leg of the tour. When MTV News caught up with BSB's Howie D while he was promoting his solo album, Back to Me, he said he hoped the show would stay the same — mostly because he didn't have much time to start from scratch.

"For the NKOTBSB show, it will be the same show as of right now," he said. "We haven't really gotten into re-rehearsals until probably March, so as far as I know, we're not changing anything. I hope not, because that means I have to learn new choreography, and I don't have much time to learn new stuff."

There is some time, however, for other stuff. With tourmate Jordan Knight hitting the road on his own later this month, Howie said he'd "love" to go on a headlining Back to Me trek too.

The NKOTBSB Tour kicks off April 20 in Belfast, Ireland, before wrapping up June 1 in Jakarta, Indonesia. We Americans are hoping that the guys have enough energy to add some American dates to that. Hear us, NKOTBSB?

Anchors away! (No, we’re not talking about that "Sex and The City" episode.) The second-annual Backstreet Boys cruise departs today (!!!) from Miami and we have some inside scoop from the one and only Howie D about what ticketholders should expect and those who aren’t going should be jealous about.

"I'm really excited. This is our second annual cruise that we're doing," he told MTV News about the cruise, which sails the friendly seas until December 5 and will even include a big surprise for die-hard fans.

Howie D wants someone, really anyone, to lie to him in his new video for "Lie To Me." His latest single off his first-ever solo album, Back to Me, is a sweepingly romantic song about heartbreak and loss.

The video follows Howie as he shoots a music video (how meta!), while also trying to reconnect with the woman he thought he'd spend forever with. The look and vibe of the video sort of reminds us of the classic Backstreet Boys video "Shape of My Heart."

The song and video was a long time coming for the Backstreet Boy, who recently chatted with MTV News about the album, which dropped earlier this month. "I started working on this record a little over five years ago. ... I really felt like I wanted to make sure it was the right record," he explained. "I didn't want to rush something out there. I believe that first impression can be the last impression, and the last thing I wanted to do was have people be like, 'Oh, wow, he should be in that box.'"

And if the song and video are vaguely reminiscient of something BSB would have cooked up, well, Howie thinks that's just fine. Read More...

So, would the guys of NKOTBSB switch places with one another? The short answer is yes. For the long answers, we went to one half of the band to see what they had to say.

We were totally into most of the guys' answers because they were pretty heartwarming and totally charming. For instance, Brian shared this with us, "I'd want to be Joe during 'Please Don’t Go Girl.' He's got this monumental moment." (For the record, he does. He actually kind of brings the house down.)

Danny's answer was just kind of adorable. Why? Well, this is what he shared, "I would switch places with 'Backstreet's Back' to do the choreography … I always wanted [to]. Well when we talked about this, in my head we'd all be doing that together. But it didn’t happen for me. I love that song and I love the choreography."

Read on for Howie’s surprising answer. Read More...

NKOTBSB

No tour is complete without some antics, and it seems that the men of NKOTBSB are not immune to pulling pranks. In fact, they seem quite into the idea of putting one another in uncomfortable situations.

When MTV News caught up with New Kids Donnie Wahlberg and Danny Wood, as well as Backstreet Boys Brian Littrell and Howie Dorough backstage during their tour stop in New Jersey on Monday, the guys shared what they've been doing to one another to keep themselves entertained and keep their counterparts on their toes.

"I was told night after night to look down during 'Hangin' Tough' cause there's a glass floor on part of the stage and I keep forgetting cause it really is one of the most special moments for me in the show," Donnie warmly recalled. "Well, I finally looked down and I saw Nick Carter's naked bum. He mooned me from below the stage. Very pale bum."

Jealous and afraid you're missing out on something? Well, he added, "I think some people are high enough in the seats that if they thought to look down they could probably see it…"

That's not the only time male nudity has happened whilst on the road. Howie shared, "They got us pretty good one time too…"

Last night, I saw the Backstreet Boys (for what feels like the millionth time) and New Kids On The Block (for the first time ever!) hit the stage as the amazing boy band hybrid NKOTBSB at the Izod Center in good old New Jersey.

Was I blown away? Why, yes. To be honest, I'm a huge fan of both groups, but really had no idea what I was getting myself into or what to expect. I was curious how these two massive pop acts would make it work. But make it work they did.

It was marvelous to see the New Kids for the first time – I’ve been a fan of theirs for longer than I'd care to admit – and it was amazing to see that BSB still have it. The room swooned for all nine guys, to say the least.

Jordan Knight recently teased that New Kids on the Block and Backstreet Boys were recording a batch of new tracks together before they kick off their big NKOTBSB tour this summer. The latest news is that their efforts will see the light of day on May 24 when the official NKOTBSB album drops. The guys announced their forthcoming album on Monday (March 14) and the fans will have quite a bit of input on it.

In addition to the new songs, the bands will each include five of their own classic songs on the album. Being that I am the biggest fan of both groups, I decided to put my picks out there in the hopes that someone in either band takes my opinion into account when planning the track list.

Backstreet Boys
"I Want It That Way"
Hands down still one of the greatest, strangely tragic pop songs of all time, featuring a rare appearance from Kevin Richardson's belting voice.

"Everybody (Backstreet's Back)"
For those who aren't diehard BSB fans they may have wondered why the song "Backstreet's Back" ended up on their debut album, it's because that album was only their United States debut. They were truly back for more in every other part of the world.

"I'll Never Break Your Heart"
It feels sacrilegious to do it without Kevin Richardson, but this is still one killer ballad.

"Shape Of My Heart"
Just give it another listen. It's so good.

"As Long As You Love Me"
Just a catchy pop tune. I'd also accept "Quit Playing Games (With My Heart)" as an equally acceptable choice for the final cut.

New Kids on the Block
"You Got It (The Right Stuff)"
Need I say more?

"Please Don't Go Girl"
Joey McIntyre's vocals on this sugary sweet ballad still break my heart.

"Step by Step"
Any song that includes a step-by-step how-to guide on all the ways these guys love us is a given.

"Tonight"
The most awesomely meta pop song of all time. It includes lines like, "Remember when we said, girl, please don't go, and how I'd be loving you forever, taught you 'bout hangin' tough as long as you got the right stuff, didn't we, girls, ooh, didn't we, girls, aah?" Fantastic!

"Call It What You Want"
We called it love the moment we heard this song that really could only exist on early '90 pop radio. Anyone got a time machine?

What Backstreet Boys and New Kids on the Block songs would you want on the NKOTBSB album? Let us know in the comments!

Jordan Knight may be hustling to get the word out about his catchy new single, "Let's Go Higher" and new solo album Unfinished (which is due in May), but the New Kid is also gearing up for a colossal summer tour courtesy of the epic collaboration between NKOTB and the Backstreet Boys.

The singer spoke to MTV News and he says that the NKOTBSB track "Turn Out The Lights" (which was teased a few months back) is only the tip of the iceberg in terms of potential collaborations between the two legendary groups.

"Yes you will see that. We recorded song with them and record probably a couple more songs with them so that is on the horizon also," he shared before spilling a few more details about "Turn Out The Lights." "The song was produced by Eman, who's actually a good friend of Joe's. It was written by Claude Kelly. So they came up with a pop smash for NKOTBSB and it sounds really great."

Jordan also revealed some more details about the tour itself, which he dubs a "boy band extravaganza." "It's unbelievable really," he continued. "I'm in awe of the whole thing."

"We're gonna have good production value," he further teased. "The stage is going to be incredible. All the seats in the arenas are pretty much good seats because the stage spans from front to back."

As for the set list, all you have to do is think back to their AMAs performance last year. "It's not, 'Who goes on first?' It's gonna be more like we come out together, we make a huge splash. It's gonna be non-stop back and forth action," he shared. "Were really gonna play off each other."

Every day a multitude of stars wander through the halls of MTV News to talk about their latest projects and goof around with our intrepid correspondents. But sometimes we catch stars elsewhere, and that's why we put together Spotted!, a daily compendium of stars in the wild.

Excitement continues to grow for the upcoming tour that will bring together New Kids on the Block and Backstreet Boys (who have cleverly dubbed their combined unit NKOTBSB). The trek, which kicks off on June 2 and is currently booked through the end of July, will showcase two of the biggest boy bands in the history of pop music, featuring individual sets as well as plenty of collaborations between the two factions. On Wednesday (January 26), seven members of the tour (Brian Littrell, Jonathan Knight, Howie Dorough, Donnie Wahlberg, Jordan Knight, Joey McIntyre and Danny Wood) gathered in Boston to announce a huge event: A show at Fenway Park, the venerable home of the Boston Red Sox, on June 11. The press conference ended with a trip to the outfield to hang out at the famous Green Monster. The show will be especially meaningful for the New Kids, who all grew up in the Boston area. Ticket pre-sales are going on now, and they'll be available to the general public on February 5.

They weren't the only stars taking care of business, as Lo Bosworth signed copies of her new book "The Lo Down" in Boca Raton, Florida, and Adele performed songs from her new album 21 for BBC Radio 1 in London. Click here for these photos as well as the entire "Spotted" archive, which features over 500 candid shots of stars like Britney Spears, Taylor Swift, Justin Bieber, Katy Perry, Jay-Z, Lady Gaga, Madonna, Rihanna, the Jonas Brothers, Kanye West and Mariah Carey!
