In the strangely long history of "Dancing With the Stars," there has never been a finale as contentious as the one that began unfolding on Monday night (November 22). After a series of shocking eliminations and a lot of chatter about a voting conspiracy, the three finalists left everything at the door and unleashed some of the best dancing they have pulled off all season. All three remaining contestants — actress Jennifer Grey, actor Kyle Massey and teenage political figure/lightning rod Bristol Palin — acquitted themselves nicely over the course of the evening.

Each dancer performed twice, delivering a first round "redemption dance" and a second round freestyle. Grey delivered a sharp paso doble in the first round and followed that up with a freestyle dance set to "Do You Love Me" from the "Dirty Dancing" soundtrack. Each dance was lively and graceful, and the judges rewarded her in kind. Grey walked away with a pair of perfect scores, easily sliding her into first place.

On the basis of dancing alone, Massey provided Grey's strongest competition. But though he managed to accumulate a 27 and a 29 for his two dances, they lacked the kind of professional polish and easy charisma that Grey wears on her sleeve. Still, his freestyle (set to "Tootsie Roll," of all things) was probably the most fun dance of the evening.

Palin brought up the rear with two passable performances, laying out a reasonable jive and a sort of sloppy freestyle and accumulating a 27 and a 25. So while she's clearly in third place, the important thing to remember is that Palin's work is way better than it was a few weeks ago. So while she doesn't have the same execution as Grey or the enthusiastic characterizations of Massey, her narrative is probably the most compelling of the three. "There are lots of haters out there who are looking forward to seeing me fail," Palin said on Monday night. Luckily for her, none of them bother to vote on "Dancing With the Stars," which is why she will probably be walking away with the coveted mirrorball trophy.

Every season of "Dancing With the Stars" seems to ebb and flow the same way. It always seems like there are too many contestants in the beginning, and while the middle part of the season sometimes feels like a slow slog that deals in little more than obvious eliminations, the move toward the end game always seems to come out of nowhere. All of a sudden, we are down to a mere five couples competing for the championship on "Dancing With the Stars," which means that we're only two weeks away from the three-way finale. That means that by now, everybody should have found another gear for their performances and those who had been lagging behind need to put up or shut up.

Former St. Louis Rams quarterback Kurt Warner certainly did the former, delivering a sick pair of performances that were by far his best of the season (and though the judges agreed, they still sort of shorted him on points). Jennifer Grey also went the "put up" route, delivering a spry, intense quickstep that earned her and her partner a perfect 30 (despite the fact that knee problems and intense pain during rehearsals are threatening to derail her entire run on the show). Something must have also finally clicked for Kyle Massey, as he finally looked like a contender and not just like a hanger-on (his jive was thrilling partially because it was so entertaining and partially because it was so unexpected). And Brandy continued to dominate, rolling over a pair of performances that were technically sharp and skillfully entertaining.

Of course, that leaves Bristol Palin, who is clearly trying her best but obviously just can't get it. She has been on borrowed time for weeks now, and neither of her dances were particularly well-executed (her second one, a samba, looked positively Hasselhoffian). The rest of the field is light years ahead of her, and it's finally time for her to shuffle off and let the grown-ups compete for the big prize.

Bristol PalinBy now, you're probably aware that Bristol Palin, the 18-year-old daughter of former Republican VP candidate Sarah Palin, gave birth to a son over the weekend, a seven-pound, four-ounce bundle of joy rather majestically named Tripp Easton Mitchell Johnston.

By naming her son Tripp, Bristol kept in line with the men of the Palin clan (her father is named Todd, and she's got brothers named Track and Trig), and while lil' Tripp's namesake can't match the sheer WTF-ness of, say, Bronx Mowgli Wentz, we're still big fans of the handle. After all, it not only recalls the windswept vistas of Alaska's north — and "American Psycho" author Bret Easton Ellis — but it also makes him sound like a character in "Dazed and Confused" ("Tripp Johnston ... Alright, alright, alright!"). Read More...
