Last week, "Gossip Girl" author Cecily von Ziegesar told MTV News that she didn't appreciate how the TV adaptation "ruined" her hard-edged character Vanessa.

"In the book, she's kick-ass and has a shaved head and wears lots of black ... and I think a lot of the readers who don't usually read teen fiction indentify with Vanessa," von Ziegesar told MTV News. "Even though I don't like Vanessa's character, it's nothing against [actress] Jessica [Szohr]. I just wish Vanessa was like she is in the books a bit more."

Believe it or not, there was actually a time when "Gossip Girl" didn't exist. Crazy, right? Well, not for Cecily von Ziegesar, who created the book series when she was an editor at Alloy Entertainment.

She loves the show, despite finding one or two qualms, and admits that Chuck and his crazy sense of style make it easy for her to TiVo week after week.

Although she was a self-proclaimed nerd back in the day, opting for the classics over "Sweet Valley High," she did admit to MTV News her one literary guilty pleasure: "I guess secretly I was reading 'Flowers in the Attic' under the covers," she said.
