It's MTV's World Cup of Rock! The World Cup is the greatest sporting event on the planet, a super-sized stage where legends are born with every strike of the ball, where infamy is just a moment away and where the dreams of millions live or die by the minute. That's why, in the spirit of the 2010 MTV Musical March Madness competition, we've created "The World Cup (Of Rock)," a FIFA-style tournament that takes 16 of the biggest nations — rock-wise (sorry Algeria) — and pits them against one another to determine just which is the most rockingly awesome. Heavyweights like the U.S.A., England, France and Germany are all here, but so are a handful of surprisingly strong sleeper countries. As the Cup progresses, we'll be unveiling the match-ups, and it's up to you to vote your favorites through. In the end, only one nation will be left standing: the world champion of rock.

The big-time soccer action continues during the 2010 FIFA World Cup (and continues into this weekend with key games featuring Brazil, Japan, Denmark and the Ivory Coast). But the biggest match-up might be the final one of the week in the MTV World Cup of Rock, as it features a rematch of an actual World Cup game that didn't have as satisfying an end as many might have hoped.

England vs. U.S.A.
This is the big one. Though their actual match ended in a 1-1 draw, there must be a winner in the head-to-head in the World Cup of Rock. Can the United States — which essentially invented rock and roll — overcome its former imperial master in England? It comes down to who you prefer: Bruce Springsteen or Coldplay? Foo Fighters or Radiohead? Paramore or Muse? These are important questions that can only be decided one way: By voting in the poll below!

Switzerland just delivered the first massive upset of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, defeating Spain in a 1-0 contest that was hard-hitting and tremendously exciting. It also puts the Spanish team — considered one of the odds-on favorites to win the whole tournament — on the ropes, as they'll probably have to sweep their next two matches against a very good Chile team and a Honduras squad looking to play spoiler.

Meanwhile, in the MTV World Cup of Rock, the battles rage on. In the second game in Group B, the stout English squad (which is currently besting South Africa in a poll that is still open) takes on South Korea. While the English have several giant bands in their pocket, the South Korean team has one superstar who rises above all the others. It's hard for any one player to change the course of a soccer game, but in MTV's World Cup of Rock, sometimes one superstar is enough. With that in mind, can all the power and finesse of the English squad defeat the international phenomenon that is Rain?

The weekend saw some tremendous first round action in the 2010 FIFA World Cup, including a dominant performance by the German team against Australia and a nail-biting draw between the United States and England. Today's World Cup of Rock match-up pits England against host nation South Africa (whose squad also played to a draw in the opening game of the tournament last week). As far as the World Cup of Rock goes, England would have to be considered an overwhelming favorite based on volume alone. They've got some of the biggest names in music at the moment, including Coldplay, Radiohead and Muse, all of whom can (and often do) fill stadiums. On the other side of the pitch, South Africa is captained by Dave Matthews (who was born there) and backed by the likes of R&B auteur Manfred Mann and high-strung rap act Die Antwoord. Can South Africa overcome the stacked roster of England? It's up to you!

We spent the day at Tim Kash's old stomping grounds: the MTV UK office. MTV News Associate Producer James Barnes showed us around, and while walking through cubicles and edit bays might be boring for some, it was really rad to see the U.K. operation in action.

In one of the edit bays, they were reworking one of our pieces from the States — 50 Cent and G-Unit's recent trip to South Africa — to be rebroadcast in the U.K.

We also got a chance to sneak into the studio while on-air reporters Rickie and Laura were doing stand-ups for news hits (or "bulletins" as they call them here). Seeing green screen in person still blows my mind. Read More...
