It's MTV's World Cup of Rock! The World Cup is the greatest sporting event on the planet, a super-sized stage where legends are born with every strike of the ball, where infamy is just a moment away and where the dreams of millions live or die by the minute. That's why, in the spirit of the 2010 MTV Musical March Madness competition, we've created "The World Cup (Of Rock)," a FIFA-style tournament that takes 16 of the biggest nations — rock-wise (sorry Algeria) — and pits them against one another to determine just which is the most rockingly awesome. Heavyweights like the U.S.A., England, France and Germany are all here, but so are a handful of surprisingly strong sleeper countries. As the Cup progresses, we'll be unveiling the match-ups, and it's up to you to vote your favorites through. In the end, only one nation will be left standing: the world champion of rock.

After dozens of matches, hundreds of thousands of votes, plenty of thrilling upsets and some truly committed fans, the MTV World Cup of Rock has come to a close, and we're happy to congratulate South Korea as the grand champion. While the final match of the 2010 FIFA World Cup of Rock was an anti-climatic slog of a game between Spain and the Netherlands, the last showdown of MTV's World Cup of Rock was exciting down to the final minute of voting. Powered by the support of international K-Pop superstar Rain, South Korea jumped out to an early lead, only to be overtaken by the raw power of Tokio Hotel and Germany. But as the hours ticked down, South Korea slowly fought their way back and managed to surge ahead of their competition.

It was a tremendous battle, and both groups of fans should be proud. In fact, kudos to the commenters on the final match post, as they all seem to be shaking hands and paying respect to one another. In many ways, it's the virtual version of the teams exchanging jerseys at the end of a match.

In the third place game, Australia (perhaps one of the biggest surprises in the entire tournament) topped Mexico to take the bronze medal. It was yet another comeback victory that featured an early Mexican lead and a late Australian surge.

Thanks to everybody who voted, commented and got involved in the inaugural MTV World Cup of Rock, and congratulations again to South Korea (and specifically to fans of Rain). Your favorite superstar would be proud of you.

It has been a long tournament, but we have finally arrived at the finals for both the 2010 FIFA World Cup and the MTV World Cup of Rock. In the former, Spain will take on the Netherlands in a match-up of two excellent soccer countries who have never won the big prize. While there is debate over whether the two best teams actually made the finals, there is no question that the two most elite squads are squaring off in the MTV World Cup of Rock. You have from now until 11:59 p.m. this Sunday, July 11 to get your votes in, and we'll officially announce the winner on Monday, July 12!

Germany vs. South Korea
In the championship game of our tournament, two powerhouses will go toe-to-toe for the respect and adoration of the world. On one side, the dominant Germany, fueled by the power and grace of Tokio Hotel. Across the field stands South Korea, a proud, fighting squad inspired by the multiple talents of Rain. Each team has a strong fan base ready to push it to the limit for the glory of their favorite squad, but which one will stand tall? Only you can decide!

The 2010 FIFA World Cup has narrowed down its initial field of 32 teams down to just two. After a stunning and tense semi-final match against Germany, Spain emerged the victor and will take on the Netherlands in the final match this Sunday, July 11. That means the third place game will pit Uruguay against the Germans this Saturday, July 10. The final match guarantees that one of those nations will be winning its very first World Cup, and both Spain and the Netherlands are countries with excellent soccer pedigrees who deserve a shot at the big prize.

Meanwhile, there are only a few hours left to vote in the two semi-final matches in the MTV World Cup of Rock (both polls close tonight at 11:59 p.m. ET). Though the German team has no chance at winning the soccer tournament, they can still play for the championship in the World Cup of Rock — if they maintain their commanding lead over a powerful but perhaps over-matched squad from Australia.

The other semi-final game sees South Korea continuing to hold off surges from Mexico. Fans of Rain (who call themselves "Clouds") have been staying organized and keeping the attack on, which could mean too much for Mexico. But anything is still possible, and only you can decide who will play for the big prize in the MTV World Cup of Rock!

Today, Germany and Spain will go toe-to-toe to determine who will go up against the Netherlands in the championship match at the 2010 FIFA World Cup. It should be a classic tilt between two European powerhouses, and though the German team seems to be the favorite, they are a very young and somewhat inexperienced squad who could easily get surprised by the precision of the Spanish attack.

Meanwhile, voting remains open in the two semi-finals matches in the MTV World Cup of Rock. Germany is still alive in that tournament as well, and they currently hold a commanding lead over their challengers from Australia. The Tokio Hotel fans seem to be on a cruise to the finals, but you should never underestimate the ability of followers of AC/DC, Silverchair, Jet or INXS to make a bit of noise.

In the other game, South Korea is breaking away from Mexico. Can the supporters of superstar Rain finish the job, or will Santana and his fellow Mexican cohorts find themselves in the finals and challenging for the big prize? Only you can decide!

Uruguay and the Netherlands (or Holland, if you swing that way) are currently embroiled in a tense match for the right to advance into the finals of the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Two slots in the finals are also up for grabs in the MTV World Cup of Rock, and the two teams below will compliment the winner of the South Korea/Mexico tilt announced earlier today. As a reminder, the voting for the two semi-final matches will close at 11:59 p.m. ET on Thursday, July 8.

Germany vs. Australia
Like their actual counterparts on the soccer field, this German team has been absolutely unstoppable, not only pushing themselves through the tournament but also knocking off rival Japan in the process. That sentiment helped out Australia, who advanced to the semis on the back of AC/DC enthusiasts. Can the Tokio Hotel-fueled Germany take their place in the finals, or will Australia score an upset? Only you can decide!

The first round is in the books, which means that our field of 16 of the rockingest nations in the 2010 FIFA World Cup is down to a list of eight. The balance in the field is pretty incredible, as there are two teams from North America, one from South America, two from Asia, two from Europe and Australia. In our first match-up, the overall top vote-getter squares off against a squad that just slid its way into the second round. But it's a new day and a new poll, which means that anything is possible.

Germany vs. Italy
The Tokio Hotel-led Germans tore through the competition in the first round, racking up huge numbers of votes on their way to an unbeaten streak. Italy managed to finish in second place in Group D with a razor-thin victory over Denmark in the waning hours of the first round. Their metal-influenced attack has proved to be resilient, but can they top the surging Germans? Only you can decide!

The 2010 FIFA World Cup gets back underway on Friday (July 2) when the final eight teams start squaring off for a chance to continue playing for soccer's most coveted trophy. Today, the MTV World Cup of Rock kicks off its knockout round, which will see the two top qualifiers from each group advance to an eight-team single-elimination tournament, and in the end, only one country will be left standing to prove that it rocks the hardest and the best. Like the actual World Cup, the top seeds from each group will play the second-place finisher from an adjacent group (so the winner of Group A will play the runner-up of Group B, and the winner of Group C will play the second-place team in Group D).

The opening round was fast and furious, with a handful of breakout juggernauts and a couple of stunning upsets. Let's meet our qualifiers.

Group A
The first group was all about Mexico, who put up good numbers in a couple of close matches against the rest of the group. They earned themselves the top seed, going 3-0 in group competition. Joining them in the next round is Uruguay, who surged to big leads against France and Nigeria and put up a very good fight against first-place Mexico.

Group B
This group was all about South Korea, who hopped onto the Rain bandwagon and never looked back. Their dominating victories over the rest of the group earned them a top seed. In second place, the United States of America caught fire in the final hours of the opening round (not unlike the actual U.S. soccer team) and narrowly edged out England for a spot in the tournament.

Group C
The most intriguing of all the groups in the opening round, Group C was dominated (as expected) by Germany, whose Tokio Hotel-fueled surge made quick work of their opponents. They'll take the top seed in the group. The battle for second place went right down to the wire, as Brazil, Spain and Japan all beat each other once each, making them all 1-2 after group play. As was stated in the original rules of the MTV World Cup of Rock, tiebreakers are decided based on the total number of votes cast, which means that Japan will be seeing second round action. Brazil and Spain have nothing to be ashamed of here, as this group was a true thriller.

Group D
The powerful team from Australia ran the table in the opening round, finishing 3-0 and earning the top seed from the group. The battle for second place was also a nail-biter, as it came down to the showdown between Denmark and Italy. In the end, Italy made a late surge and scored the victory by a mere five votes, securing their spot in the second round.

So there you have it. The MTV World Cup of Rock round of eight includes Mexico, Uruguay, South Korea, the United States of America, Germany, Japan, Australia and Italy. The voting for the first two match-ups will open today, with two more coming tomorrow. In the next round, Germany plays Italy, Australia challenges Japan, Mexico will square off against the United States and South Korea will go toe-to-toe with Uruguay. So get your vuvuzelas ready and prepare your voting fingers, because the World Cup of Rock continues!

It's the final day of first round action in the 2010 FIFA World Cup, with the last two groups currently deciding who will move on and who will stay behind. Meanwhile, the group round of the MTV World Cup of Rock tournament is nearly complete, with only a handful of match-ups left. The favorites are already shaking out, but there are still some slots in the knockout round up for grabs.

Germany vs. Spain
As expected, the German team has become something of a juggernaut in Group C (they are currently engulfed in an epic back-and-forth battle with Japan in another match), while Spain is struggling a bit despite the veteran presence of the Iglesias family. Can they overcome the awesome power of Tokio Hotel and pull off the upset, or have Germany already punched their ticket into the next round? Only you can decide!

The 2010 FIFA World Cup is at a fever pitch, with more eliminations coming today in key matches featuring a handful of contenders. Meanwhile, the World Cup of Rock is winding down the first round of matches on the way to the elimination round. Today's match-up features two top contenders going head-to-head.

Germany vs. Japan
Each of these squads has been laying beatdowns to their respective opponents, and both seem likely to advance. But can the blitzkrieg delivered care of fans of Tokio Hotel be enough to overcome the surprising surge by the fans voting for Japan (mostly on the strength of the Japanese metal contingent, lead by legends Dir En Grey). Which nation will reign supreme in Group C? Only you can decide!

Today's World Cup action is underway, with New Zealand scoring a very late goal in extra time to firm up a draw against Slovakia and the Ivory Coast (playing without injured superstar Didier Drogba) currently testing a very talented Portugal squad. In the first of two World Cup of Rock matches, the multi-faceted team from Brazil takes on the powerhouse from Germany.

Brazil vs. Germany
The Brazilian soccer team has won more World Cups than any other nation, and their team in the 2010 tournament is a favorite. Their World Cup of Rock squad includes a number of free-thinking exports, from psychedelic legends Os Mutantes to the tribal buzzsaw attack of Soulfly. On the other side of the pitch sits Germany, a nation best represented by modern glam icons Tokio Hotel, industrial metal maniacs Rammstein and the staggering overseas success of David Hasselhoff. Two very different teams that are very evenly matched, but who will walk away with the victory in hopes of advancing?
