Hef and Crystal Harris

By Zachary Swickey

Crystal Harris, who until Tuesday was set to be the next Mrs. Hugh Hefner, has revealed her aspirations of becoming a professional singer. If the blonde bombshell can get the world’s biggest playboy (pun totally intended) to “put a ring on it,” then what can’t she do, I suppose?

The 24-year-old’s debut tune, “Club Queen,” hit the iTunes store on June 14 and a full album is expected to drop later this year. Speaking with RadarOnline, Harris cited her father as inspiration, “My dad was a singer in the UK, and I got my pipes from him.”

After performing her new track at last week’s opening of the newest Playboy Club in London, Harris is looking toward future gigs, saying, “I can’t wait to do more shows and have more songs soon.”

Harris is the latest to join the lengthy (D-)list of celebs taking a shot at pop stardom. Recording your own song is as “in” as chicks putting rooster feathers in their hair. Seems like the appropriate time to take a look back at some of the craziest of ‘em. Read More...

The lights are dimming here in the MTV Newsroom, which means it's time to pack up, mix a John Daly, eat some Thai food, get in line for "Kick-Ass" and prepare for Record Store Day. Your weekend may look slightly different, but feel free to change any of the salient details in the above scenario. However, before you decide on "Death at a Funeral" over "Kickass" or a burrito instead of a yellow curry, be sure to check out all of the things you might have missed this week on the MTV Newsroom Blog, from the visit from the Stanley Cup to some deep thoughts about Conan O'Brien.

» There was a lot of big news in the television world this week, most notably the revelation that Conan O'Brien would be returning to television via cable station TBS.

» In other TV news, the music-heavy HBO series "Treme" premiered last Sunday night. Stay tuned for more on "Treme" every Monday morning, where we'll break down some of the great music from the show.

» Coheed and Cambria officially ended the MTV Musical March Madness tournament when they came by the Newsroom to collect their championship trophy. They thanked the fans and plan to take it on the road — and drink beer out of it.

» Because of Big Mike's save last week, two people were sent home from "American Idol" this week. Simon Cowell doesn't have Katie Stevens or Andrew Garcia to push around anymore.

» Also on the "Idol" tip: Ryan Seacrest acted a little strangely this week, but he's just trying to keep the energy up.

Every day a multitude of stars wander through the halls of MTV News to talk about their latest projects and goof around with our intrepid correspondents. But sometimes we catch stars elsewhere, and that's why we put together Spotted!, a daily compendium of stars in the wild.

"The Hills" will be returning for one last season when it premieres Monday, April 27 on MTV. The final 12 episodes of the long-running series will deal with rumors about Kristin Cavallari, the brief return of Lauren Conrad and the ongoing drama that is Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt. The trailer for the final season hints at both marriage trouble and the controversy surrounding Montag's series of plastic surgeries, which have severely altered her appearance. The singer, whose album Superficial has stalled despite early buzz, unveiled her new body in Las Vegas on Saturday (April 10) when she donned a bikini to sit poolside at the Liquid Pool at Aria at CityCenter.

She wasn't the only star showing herself off over the weekend, as the Backstreet Boys showed up at the Silverado Resort in Napa Valley (where they played an intimate acoustic set) on Sunday (April 11) and Khloe Kardashian rolled through Miami on Friday (April 9). Click here for these photos as well as the entire "Spotted!" archive, which features over 400 candid shots of stars like Britney Spears, Taylor Swift, Justin Timberlake, Miley Cyrus, Justin Bieber, Jay-Z, Beyoncé, Lady Gaga, Jessica Simpson, Katy Perry, the Jonas Brothers, Rihanna, the Black Eyed Peas and Madonna!

Hey girl,

We haven't met yet, but I guess we're on our way to becoming sisters. My name is Vanessa White Wolf. I'm actually Native American. This morning I read TMZ's report from your spokesperson that you and Spencer are planning to change your names to White Wolf and Running Bear, respectively. And while I appreciate your and Spencer's quest to becoming more spiritual, I'm wondering if there's a way to do it that doesn't co-opt my heritage. Totally understand that it's a great last name. We like it ourselves an awful lot. It just goes back a long way and we're pretty proud of its long Comanche history, housed right in the Great Plains. Have you been to Oklahoma before? Just curious.

Because I can see that you're aware of and sensitive to the plight of the Native American. We've had a bad few centuries! Maybe there's another name you could find? Spencer choosing Running Bear makes a little more sense. But — and I mean this in the nicest possible way — you're not a Wolf. Perhaps you could go with White Cat? White Kitten? White Bird? Those seem like chipper, friendly animals! Much more your type. Actually, how does Blonde Bird sound? Let's discuss.

The last point I want to make is that Speidi is just such a perfect name for you guys, and combining White Wolf and Running Bear doesn't have that same sort of finesse. Right? "Whunning Wear" is a little clunky, don't you think?

Yours,

Vanessa White Wolf

2009 is coming to a close, which means that it's time to check in on what the favorite albums, artists and songs were among the fine folks in the MTV Newsroom. Be sure to check out James Montgomery's definitive year-end list for 2009, and enjoy the "10 In 2009" series that will be running over the next two weeks.

I was surprised to find out that making this list wasn't as easy as I thought it would be. A lot of the music I listened to had been from late '08 or stuff I've been revisiting. Anyway, here's what I came up with (in no particular order).

Lady Gaga, The Fame Monster
Yes, the second album (which is sort of the re-release of the first album until it wasn't — I got confused too) is much more cohesive, has better singles ("Bad Romance" and "Monster" trump "Poker Face" and "Just Dance"), and this is much more representative of the powerhouse that Gaga is becoming (and will become). (I suddenly realize I sound frighteningly like Perez Hilton.) While The Fame felt like a collection of good singles, The Fame Monster felt like a great album.

Mariachi El Bronx, Mariachi El Bronx
When a hardcore band releases a straight mariachi record, it's pretty badass. Defy expectations much?

Kid Cudi, Man on the Moon
I really wanted to put Kid Cudi on here because I love his mixtapes and I think the guy has a huge career on the horizon. I liked this album, but I wasn't in love with it. I appreciate that it was a concept album and it was his creative manifesto. However, I don't think the album shows his full potential (especially considering the lack of rapping). Anyway, Steven Roberts said he was an artist to watch in 2009, and looking back we can confirm Steven Roberts is omniscient.

"The Hills" star and aspiring pop star Heidi Montag is back with more new music. She already revealed her "Body Language" at the Miss Universe pageant a few months back, and now she's feeding into the stereotype by mockingly titling her official debut album, aptly titled Superficial.

Dressed in a strapless, polka-dotted leotard (what pop singer isn't wearing leotards these days?) in front of a wall of cassettes, the singer plans to release the album on January 12. "This cover is a shout out to the '80s," she told People. "It makes you remember when you just had to run out to the record store and get your favorite album."

Liz Ciganovich, who worked with Montag on the album as its production and art director, said the photo is an homage to mixtapes. "I thought, 'Let's do a shot that says '80s — lets pay homage to the mix tape!'" she said. "The hunt was on. I believe I purchased every tape in Los Angeles!"

If you think that Heidi is just using her fame to cash in with her pop music, think again. Her sister-in-law, Stephanie Pratt, reveals that she's always wanted to be a famous singer. "When I first met her, she said she wanted to be a pop star, and this was like three years ago," she said. "Who really can be a pop star unless you've been singing and dancing forever?"

Heidi Montag made headlines and turned heads by appearing on the cover of Playboy's September issue. When you saw the "Hills" star wearing that white bikini and covered in dirt, you couldn’t help but think, "Wow!" Well, good news for all you Heidi fans: Montag recently told MTV News she would consider posing for Playboy again.

There was some discussion around the office about whether she should pose again. To end the bickering, we took to the streets to see what the people of Times Square thought.

What our informal poll discovered is that if Heidi poses again, there would be very few complaints: 90 percent of our interviewees said Heidi should appear in Playboy again. Only 10 percent said she should not appear again. (One of those nay voters was a guy — who would have ever guessed?)

Would you want to see Heidi Montag in another issue of Playboy? Let us know below.

We like to keep it lighthearted here in the MTV Newsroom, but this week seemed to run at all sorts of extremes. Even amidst the excitement of a handful of euphoric concert experiences, tragedy repeatedly crept up to remind us that there is always balance in life. As you pour a little liquor out for DJ AM, Ted Kennedy or anybody else you may have personally lost this week, take a look at the week that was.

» Superstar record spinner DJ AM was found dead in New York, and we have his final MTV interview.

» The country lost a great statesman this week in Massachusetts Senator Edward Kennedy, who always championed the rights of young people and taught MTV some interesting things about government back in 2000.

» In another flashback, we revisited the tragic anniversary of the death of Aaliyah, who left behind an amazing legacy of forward-thinking pop.

Last night on the broadcast of the Miss Universe pageant, MTV star Heidi Montag took her next step toward building her career as a pop singer. Montag performed her new single "Body Language" during the show, and she brought a fully-choreographed (albeit lip-synched) show to the Bahamas for her television debut. The performance received mixed reviews, though there's no denying the hook of the song, which borrows a sample from Yaz's 1982 hit "Situation."

But now that MTV has weighed in on Montag's performance, it's time to turn to the fans and find out what the public thinks of the song and dance at last night's show. So we hit the streets in Times Square to talk to a handful of people (including a few standing in line to see Montag's sister-in-law Stephanie Pratt on today's episode of "It's On with Alexa Chung") and asked them their opinion.

These results are nowhere close to scientific, but the numbers show that 83 percent of the respondents gave the whole package a thumbs down. The reasons were all over the map, too. Some simply didn't like the tune, while others were thrown by her dance choices. And more than one person brought up the fact that her outfit resembled one that Britney Spears wore at the MTV Video Music Awards back in 2000. Still, the 17 percent who endorsed Montag's show cited her beauty and her charisma as reasons to love the budding pop star. Regardless, Montag is just letting the criticism roll off her back.

What do you think: Did Montag steal the show, or did she spoil it? Leave your comments below or head over to Your.MTV.com to make your voice heard!

In any given year, there isn't a whole lot of buzz surrounding the Miss Universe pageant. After all, does anybody really need to know that a bikini-clad woman from Croatia likes Julia Roberts movies? But the buzz for last night's show was much larger, not just because everybody was curious if Miss Venezuela would repeat (she did!) but because MTV reality star Heidi Montag would be making her live debut with a performance of her new single "Body Language," from her forthcoming album.

Following an introduction by pageant co-host Claudia Jordan, the Yaz-borrowing intro to "Body Language" kicked in and Montag stormed the stage wearing a black blazer and flesh-colored pants. She quickly doffed the jacket to reveal a flesh-colored top, creating an almost-nude effect not unlike Britney Spears' outfit at the 2000 MTV Video Music Awards. Montag lip-synced the song and stayed in step with her backup dancers, all of whom had been furiously rehearsing in preparation for the show, which broadcast from the Bahamas. During the performance, the broadcast frequently cut away from Montag to show clips of various contestants in bathing suits on the beach, and when the camera was on Heidi, it was more than a little zoom-happy. Still, she got across the sexiness of the song despite a few dancing missteps.

By the time the song wrapped up, Montag was clearly out of breath but looked satisfied. We didn't get the chance to hear how her voice sounded live in person, but there will likely be more chances in the future. General sentiment was that the dancing was a little off, but it was honestly hard to tell considering the production and camera choices. Montag earned herself a passing grade, which means that the jury is still out on whether or not her music career will take off.
