Red Hot chili Peppers

By Zachary Swickey

California rockers the Red Hot Chili Peppers are gearing up for the release of their newest rock/funk masterpiece, I’m With You, and have acquired the services of famous street artist Mr. Brainwash to help promote the album with some Pepper-themed guerilla marketing.

TMZ reports that Mr. Brainwash, real name Thierry Guetta, has been in the Los Angeles area hanging art work that bears the album’s release date (8/30/11), the Chili Peppers logo and a bit of Guetta’s signature pop flare. With his bumbling charm (and wicked facial hair), Guetta essentially starred in the documentary Exit Through the Gift Shop, which was directed by the notoriously stealth Banksy, who picked up an Oscar nom for Best Documentary for his efforts. RHCP have also recruited Guetta for some other upcoming projects, but the artist was hush when pressed for details.

Collaborating with an artist has become a booming trend. Old timer Roger Waters hired street artists to promote his recent tour behind Pink Floyd’s iconic double album The Wall. Even professional companies and prestigious museums have been known to commission controversial artists. Here are some of our favorite band/artist collabs that all provide some great eye candy.

Interpol and David Lynch

Interpol did something special at this year’s Coachella festival when they worked on a video collaboration with the mysterious David Lynch, director of creepy cult faves like Blue Velvet, Lost Highway and Twin Peaks. The band played along to a short film Lynch directed for the group’s song “Lights,” off their recent self-titled record. The black-and-white animated clip contains a quirky character that repeatedly pushes a red button that makes its color burst all over the screen. In typical Lynch fashion, it will leave you thinking WTF?

The wait is finally over. After nine years, six movies and billions of dollars in profit, the "Harry Potter" film series has started its march to the end. Today marks the release of "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 1," the first part of the final entry in the film series (the second will premiere in the spring of 2011). It is by far the most visually arresting and narratively intense "Harry Potter" film yet, featuring the approach to the final showdown with Lord Voldemort and no shortage of making out. There are other movies coming out this weekend (like the Russell Crowe thriller "The Next Three Days" and the limited release Sally Hawkins vehicle "Made in Dagenham"), but the movie world will be dominated by "Potter" for this weekend and probably many weekends to come.

If you're a true hardcore, you've probably already seen "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 1" at one of the many sold-out midnight screenings. But just in case you had to be somewhere early this morning and are going to enjoy the movie later (or if you need motivation to see it a second time, third or fifth time), check out the playlist below to properly get yourself in a spell-casting mood. There are plenty of songs about magic (Lacuna Coil's "Spellbound," Angels & Airwaves' "Everything's Magic," Klaxons' "Magick") and the evil of He Who Must Not Be Named (Interpol's "Evil," Killswitch Engage's "Fixation on the Darkness"). There's also a song by Grace Potter and the Nocturnals (perhaps Grace is a distant relative of Harry?) and a tribute to the big kiss (3OH!3's "My First Kiss"). But we begin with B.o.B and Rivers Cuomo teaming up for a little "Magic."

With the summer basically over and everybody back to work and school, it's time to get back to the business of late night hosts chatting up celebrities and throwing to hot musical acts. Everybody is back with a vengeance this week, save for the perpetually-on-hiatus Carson Daly and, strangely, "Lopez Tonight"), meaning that there will be a glut of big-time stars keeping you up well past your bed time. If you're into a louder sort of slumber, tune in to "The Late Show With David Letterman," as he'll welcome the always-excellent Black Angels (Wednesday, September 8th) as well as Jamey Johnson (Thursday, September 9).

For a kinder, gentler late night experience, "The Tonight Show" should be your destination. In addition to chatting with the adorable Carey Mulligan (Tuesday, September 7) and Video Music Awards host Chelsea Handler (Wednesday), Jay Leno will welcome the musical stylings of Ray LaMontagne (Wednesday), David Gray (Thursday) and Sarah McLachlan (Friday, September 10). LaMontagne also makes an appearance on Thursday's edition of "Jimmy Kimmel Live" this week, along with Scissor Sisters (Tuesday) and Interpol (Wednesday). Meanwhile, Jimmy Fallon's eclectic guest list includes Ashley Tisdale (Tuesday), "Nikita" star Maggie Q (Wednesday) and entertainment legend Jerry Lee Lewis (Thursday).

On cable, you should probably tune into "The Daily Show With Jon Stewart" to watch his conversation with Tim Gunn (Tuesday), then stay tuned to catch Stephen Colbert talking to Anthony Romero on "The Colbert Report." In preparation for the VMAs, Chelsea Handler will talk to performer B.o.B on Tuesday's episode of "Chelsea Lately." And hey, even though it's a repeat, it's worth tuning into Thursday night's episode of "Lopez Tonight," if only because it's the wildly entertaining entry featuring the cast of MTV's "Jersey Shore."

Late night ratings are down across the board. You can blame any number of things on the decline of the numbers, though you certainly can't put it at the feet of the bookers, who continue to roll out excellent lineups in the face of more and more late night distraction. Take this week's "The Late Show with David Letterman" lineup. It includes at least two killer musical guests in the Flaming Lips (Wednesday, July 28) and Interpol (Thursday, July 29) as well as interviews with the always funny Denis Leary (Monday, July 26), the wonderful Kristen Schaal (Tuesday, July 27) and the criminally charming Paul Rudd (Thursday). There's something for everybody in there, even if you're a fan of Dierks Bentley (who plays Tuesday night).

Jay Leno doesn't have the same kind of musical firepower on "The Tonight Show" this week (he'll have Lyle Lovett on Monday and Stone Temple Pilots on Thursday), but he'll still have undoubtedly scintillating conversations with Bill O'Reilly (Monday), Jennifer Aniston (Thursday) and Gabourey Sidibe
(Friday, July 30). Jimmy Kimmel will chat with Johnny Knoxville (Monday), Hugh Hefner (Tuesday) and Zac Efron (Wednesday) while also welcoming the musical stylings of Grace Potter & the Nocturnals (Monday) and Rhymefest (Wednesday). That's a pretty good batch of music, though it once again can't hold a candle to Jimmy Fallon's "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon." That show will feature performances by Hanson (Monday), Of Montreal (Thursday) and Green Day (Friday), all of whom are known for delivering big. Fallon's other guests include 50 Cent (Wednesday) and crowd favorite Rudd (Friday).

"Lopez Tonight" continues to grow as a force, as that show will feature Selena Gomez (Monday), Steve Carell (Tuesday) and Diddy (Wednesday) this week. The daytime slate is still a little sleepy (it being the summer and all), though it's probably worth it to tune into "The View" on Wednesday (when 50 Cent will be stopping by) and again on Friday (when the show will feature Snoop Dogg).

Who are you most looking forward to on talk shows this week? Let us know in the comments!

· The Vaselines are reuniting! (That’s Kurt Cobain’s favorite band, you unwashed masses…)

· Lindsay Lohan’s all over “Ugly Betty.” This looks surprisingly promising.

· An Interpol fan made this video for “Rest My Chemistry” using technology used for data mapping, and the band’s all into it.

· Mike Gravel's making a play for Obama Girl. We sincerely preferred that rock-in-the-lake clip.
