Lindsay Lohan

Everybody has an opinion about Lindsay Lohan.

Most people have negative feelings about the once-promising actress, bemoaning her wasted talent, how tiresome the media's blanket coverage of her continuous troubles has become and her apparent disregard for the orders of the court. (This would all be over if you'd just do your damn community service, Lindsay! Shut up and get to the morgue; someone's gotta scrub those floors and a judge determined that that person is you whether you like it or not.)

Anyway, something else has recently come to light regarding Lohan that is probably going to make people even more angry – her never-ending court saga has likely cost California taxpayers millions, according to a report from FOX News.

"From logistics to the transcript reporters to the clerks, it is exorbitantly expensive to have a court appearance. It is important we understand what a waste of time this is,” former federal prosecutor Michael Wildes of Wildes & Weinberg tells FOX. “It costs tens of thousands of dollars per court appearance for all the clerks, the security, and those court reporters who get paid by the page, not to mention all the collateral support for something like this. Plus it diverts the administration of justice for other matters."

If Wildes' estimate is true – that the combined cost of staffing and securing each appearance costs many thousand dollars – it should be multiplied by 20, which is how many court appearances Lohan has made since her first arrest in 2007 for drunk driving. That adds up to a whole lot of cash. Read More...

Hilary Duff

Back in the early part of this millennium, there was a love triangle between three of the tween world's biggest stars – Hilary Duff, Lindsay Lohan and Aaron Carter. That's right, long before they grew up (and Duff announced her pregnancy over the weekend) and the world took them in very different directions, teen dreams LiLo and Duff were once in a bit of a heated feud over the affections of Backstreet brother Carter.

Duff and Carter began dating back in 2001. They met on the set of her hit Disney series, "Lizzie McGuire." Things were going great for the two … until flame-haired love sorceress (and then-major movie star) Lindsay Lohan came along. Carter reportedly cheated with Lohan while still with Duff and eventually it all came crashing down in a very public way.

At the time, it seemed they all had a pretty good shot at making the transition from teen star to adult superstar. But a decade later, things turned out … um, different. If someone had told us then that Duff would go on to best Lohan in not only the boy department but also with her career and image, we would have been a little surprised. OK, so Duff was kind of the Miley Cyrus of her day, but Lohan showed so much promise that nothing seemed like it could knock her off her Hollywood trajectory. As for Carter, well that's a whole other story. Read More...

Beyonce

By Morgan Schwartz

Father knows best. Or at least that’s what celebrities sometimes tell themselves when hiring one or more of their parents to help out with their careers. But does being a good mom or dad necessarily translate into being a stellar manager?

Beyonce is just the most recent star to experience some of the trauma that comes along with hiring a parent to help shape a career. Bey, who made it big with Destiny’s Child before branching off and becoming a superstar solo artist, enlisted the help of both her mom and her dad from the start. Mom Tina took on the role of “stylist,” while dad Matthew stepped in as her manager. While things were seemingly going well, it was announced in March that Beyonce and her dad had “parted ways amicably” (she continues to work with her mother). Now, speculation has surfaced that the separation may not have been as friendly as previously reported.

Although we can’t really speak to the situation – neither Beyonce’s camp nor Live Nation are commenting – it has given us inspiration to look back at other celebrity/parent working relationships to help us decide whether or not hiring a family member is a good or bad idea in showbiz.

Lindsay Lohan

Let’s start with Lindsay Lohan. It’s no secret that drama follows this girl wherever she goes, so it should come as no surprise that her working relationship with her mom Dina is known to be somewhat of a disaster. Dina has worked as Lindsay’s manager despite constant criticism about the way she interacts with her eldest daughter. The Long Island native was known to constantly party with Lindsay, speak publicly about LiLo without her permission, and act as an enabler for the bad behavior we know Lindsay loves to get up to. Lindsay’s dad is also notorious for riding on his daughter’s coattails and making statement after statement about her wrecked reputation. Although never officially employed by Lindsay, Michael Lohan has managed to impact her career (probably for the worse).

Read on for our verdict on Lindsay’s working relationship with her parents as well as our thoughts on the Kardashians, the Simpsons and Britney Spears. Read More...

Even on relatively low-key days, the saga of Lindsay Lohan only gets weirder. As soon as the excitement began to build that the troubled actress (who is currently out on $40,000 bail from her felony grand theft charges) would be appearing on "The Late Show With David Letterman" to deliver the Top Ten List, it was just as quickly taken away.

The "Mean Girls" star, who was supposed to appear on Thursday (February 17) night's episode of the show (other guests scheduled to for that evening include fellow controversial celebrity party girl Paris Hilton), wrote on her Twitter page late on Tuesday (February 15), "I am NOT going to be doing David Letterman, I'm not sure how this happened, but I am sorry for the confusion."

As it turns out, LiLo wasn't pulling her followers legs. On Wednesday morning (February 16), CBS/Worldwide Pants (Letterman's production company) released a statement which read, "Lindsay Lohan will not be delivering a Top Ten list on Thursday’s 'Late Show with David Letterman,' as had been previously announced. We made a mistake. Someone purporting to be a friend of Lindsay’s reached out to the show yesterday, allegedly on her behalf, and booked her to appear. Clearly, this person was not authorized to make commitments on her behalf. We wish Lindsay well, and look forward to having her on the show in the future."

Apparently, the booking was made by none other than Lohan's dad Michael. He claims that Lindsay knew about the booking and gave her approval before the call was made. Like many things surrounding Lohan, it raises a ton of questions. Who contacted Worldwide Pants to tell them they had been duped? If Lindsay was never aware of the booking, what did Michael Lohan hope to accomplish? And if Lindsay did know about it, why did she back out? Oh, unknowable universe, we need answers!

Because we feel like we've been robbed of some quality late night television in the form of Lohan's Top Ten, here's a couple of Top Ten lists we would have loved to see the actress deliver on the show.

» Top Ten Ways Your Friend Tricks You Into Appearing On "Letterman"

» Top Ten Places To Inappropriately Wear A White Dress

» Top Ten Ways "Glee" Hurts All Of Our Feelings

» Top Ten Menu Items At The Los Angeles County Courthouse Cafeteria

» Top Ten Crimes Lindsay Lohan Hasn't Been Charged With (Yet)

» Top Ten Ways To Prank "The Late Show"

When pop culture historians usually look back on any given year, there are a handful of individual moments that really stand out. And while 2010 did feature a few big moments in time (Lady Gaga's mead dress-enhanced acceptance speech at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards and the day Lil Wayne was released from jail come to mind), the year was more about a series of running themes.

Over the past 12 months, there seemed to be certain stories that you couldn't get away from because they seemed to keep happening. For example, the devastating series of earthquakes in Haiti kick-started a number of reactions, including an outpouring of direct support, the Hope For Haiti telethon, the release of the new version of "We Are the World" and the saga of Wyclef Jean's run for president of his home nation.

Lindsay Lohan's year was also checkered, broken up by a series of court appearances, rehab stints and work-related changes.

(Click here for more photos of the biggest moments of the year, including Lindsay Lohan's legal woes, Betty White's big comeback, Lady Gaga's meat dress and the rise of Katy Perry!)

Miley Cyrus also seemed to be constantly in the news, whether it was for the release of her new album Can't Be Tamed, the debut of her star-making film "The Last Song," her parents' troubled marriage or the release of personal photos and videos.

Meanwhile, Justin Bieber was a big deal for 12 straight months not only because of albums and singles but also because of a huge tour, the development of a film, a number of fan frenzies and a line of nail polish (among many other products). And Conan O'Brien had a year-long arc that started on "The Tonight Show," made a pit stop in several cities across the country on a tour and ended up with a new show on TBS. All told, it was a pretty wild year, so enjoy a walk through the past year in photos.

Every day a multitude of stars wander through the halls of MTV News to talk about their latest projects and goof around with our intrepid correspondents. But sometimes we catch stars elsewhere, and that's why we put together Spotted!, a daily compendium of stars in the wild.

It has been a rough year for Lindsay Lohan, as her run-ins with the law seem to have finally caught up with her. The troubled starlet has already had one stint in jail and some experience in rehab in 2010. The last time she was in court, the judge guaranteed that if he saw Lohan again, she would be going back to jail, and the concern was the her recent probation violation would send her back to the slammer for a full 180 days. But she caught a break today, as the judge decided that she should be sent back to rehab (where she has spent the last few weeks) rather than go back to jail. She will be due back in court on February 25, 2011, for an update, and she will also be subject to drug testing between the time she is released from rehab and that date.

Lohan wasn't the only star in the public eye, as Kanye West brought "Runaway" to a premiere crowd in New York and Lady Gaga was scene hanging around her hotel in London. Click here for these photos as well as the entire "Spotted" archive, which features over 500 candid shots of stars like Britney Spears, Taylor Swift, Katy Perry, Miley Cyrus, Jay-Z, Justin Bieber, Eminem, Justin Timberlake, Rihanna, Mariah Carey, Jennifer Lopez, Madonna, the Jonas Brothers and Adam Lambert!

Every year, the MTV Video Music Awards show is full of surprises, unpredictable moments and truly shocking events that keep the show on the minds of music fans long after the last Moonman is given out every year. Sunday night's (September 12) show was no exception, as there were plenty of twists that nobody saw coming. The show had jaws on the floor early, as during Eminem's show-opening performance, Rihanna walked on stage to sing the hook to their chart-topping hit "Love the Way You Lie." Rihanna had previously said that she wasn't going to be able to make it to the VMAs because of her shooting schedule for the upcoming film "Battleship," but she clearly duped everybody into one of the coolest VMA surprises in recent memory.

But was it the biggest of the night? Rihanna set the bar pretty high, though there were plenty of other curve balls tossed into the mix. What about Lindsay Lohan's surprise appearance, which saw the troubled star joke about her substance abuse troubles and discourage VMA host Chelsea Handler from drinking. There was also Justin Bieber's impromptu drum solo, the lyrical content of Taylor Swift's bold new song, a drop-in from Clipse member Pusha T during Kanye West's swing through "Runaway," Cher's '80s-tastic outfit and Linkin Park's epic performance at Griffith Observatory. Each one turned heads and stopped hearts for a split second, creating those thrilling VMA moments that nobody watching will soon forget.

So which one was the biggest, best and most memorable surprise of the night? Vote in the poll below and lay out your arguments in the comments!

The Moonmen have all been handed out and the stars have gone home, but there's plenty of 2010 MTV Video Music Awards news, interviews, behind-the-scenes scoop, party reports and more still to come, so keep it locked on MTVNews.com.

"I don't care what anyone says. I know that I'm a damn good actress. And I know that in my past I was young and irresponsible — but that's what growing up is. You learn from your mistakes. I've admitted to the things that I've done — to, you know, dabbling in certain things and trying things 'cause I was young and curious and thought it was like, OK, 'cause other people were doing it and other people put it in front of me. And I see what happened in my life because of it."

-Actress, singer and tabloid fixture Lindsay Lohan, pouring her heart out to Vanity Fair in her first published interview since she was released from jail. In the magazine's cover story, Lohan touches on a number of subjects, including her incarceration, the future of her career, the mixed messages circulated about her substance abuse issues and her complicated relationship with her father Michael. "I think my biggest focus for myself is learning how to continue to get through the trauma that my father has caused in my life," she told the magazine. "The worst part of it is you turn around and you see your dad crying and normally you'd be, like, happy that your father's there [in the courtroom]. But then he has to go and do an interview right after."

Lohan also denies ever using prescription drugs for recreational purposes ("I never have — never in my life. I have no desire to," she said) and told her side of the story about the night her SCRAM bracelet — a court-ordered accessory that monitored her alcohol intake — was set off, triggering the chain reaction that landed her behind bars. "If I were the alcoholic everyone says I am, then putting a bracelet on would have ended me up in detox, in the emergency room, because I would have had to come down from all the things that people say I'm taking and my father says I'm taking," she said. "So that says something, because I was fine."

The star of "Mean Girls" and "Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen" has already started her comeback, as she'll be portraying famous porn star Linda Lovelace in a biopic about her life called "Inferno."

As anybody who has ever seen the videos for "Alejandro" or "Bad Romance" is aware, Lady Gaga is hardly uncomfortable with being scantily-clad. She recently appeared on the cover of Rolling Stone wearing little more than a thong and a weaponized bra, and this week she bares everything on the cover of Vanity Fair. Though the photos that have been released see the 24-year-old pop star strategically covering up her controversial bits, it's still jarring and bracing, especially for an artist who takes her personal style and costuming so seriously (though there is an argument to be made that her naked body is simply another persona).

In the entertainment world, you're nobody until somebody asks you to take your clothes off for the cover of a magazine. Here are a handful of the most notable bare-all moments from recent magazine history.

Lindsay Lohan, New York
In their "Spring Fashion" issue in 2008, Lindsay Lohan stripped down to her birthday suit and re-enacted a classic Marilyn Monroe photo shoot with only a few sheer scarves to keep herself warm.

Jennifer Aniston, Rolling Stone
Rolling Stone has a history of nude and nearly-nude cover subjects (including John Lennon, Christina Aguilera, Brooke Shields and Britney Spears), but the one that really shook the planet was Aniston's. She appeared completely stripped on the cover of the magazine during the height of "Friends"-mania and with her rear end completely exposed for the universe to gawk at.

Demi Moore, Vanity Fair
Demi Moore might just be the godmother of stars who strip for magazine covers (especially Vanity Fair), but her first nude cover was her most eye-catching. Coming off the success of "Ghost," Moore appeared completely nude on the cover of Vanity Fair save for one key accessory: her very pregnant belly.

After serving 13 days of her potential three-month sentence, Lindsay Lohan was set free from the confines of the Century Regional Detention Facility in Los Angeles early Monday morning (August 2). The 24-year-old actress and singer was taken directly to an unnamed, court-ordered rehab facility directly thereafter, where she will have to spend 90 days (and it seems highly unlikely that she will have any time chopped off the end of that particular sentence). The initial plan was to send Lohan to Morningside Recovery, though there were concerns that it would not be secure or secretive enough to take care of Lohan's recovery.

In her just-under-two-weeks of incarceration, Lohan was mostly kept away from other inmates for the sake of her safety. She also reportedly cried a lot and ate a lot of Twizzlers. Though her rehab stint is mandated by the court and a part of her sentence, she'll have a lot more freedom than she did inside her cell at Century Regional. She'll even get to receive care packages, which is why we've put together this list of stuff she may need while she's getting healthy.

Red Vines
It was reported that Lohan became attached to eating Twizzlers while she was behind bars, but she should really upgrade to Red Vines (often called "Executive Twizzlers" by people currently writing this blog post). And since they're easily sharable, they could make an excellent icebreaker while trying to meet new people in group session.

A Case of Dr. Pepper
Often people in rehab are coached to replace their more self-destructive addictions (like hard drugs) with more socially-acceptable (and legal) ones (like nicotine or sugar). A nice can of soda pop can curb a jones, and even though Diet Dr. Pepper tastes just like regular Dr. Pepper, she should treat herself to those extra calories. She's earned'em.

A Bootleg Copy of "Salt"
The Angelia Jolie action flick came out only a few days after Lohan entered jail, so she missed out on an adrenaline-pumping series of shootouts, chases, twists and turns. She'll need to kill time, and what better way to do that then a Jolie-lead piece of badassery?
