Considering that indie icons Arcade Fire walked away with the Album of the Year prize at Sunday night's (February 13) 53rd Grammy Awards, perhaps the biggest news in the indie rock universe came from the United Kingdom. In the wee hours of Monday morning (February 14), Radiohead announced that not only was their new album completely done and would be called The King of Limbs, but it would also be available for a download this Saturday, February 19. The sudden announcement echoes the way Radiohead's In Rainbows first got introduced to the universe back in 2007, when the band made the announcement that they were done with the album and then released it on the very same day (though this time around you'll actually have to pay full price for the album, rather than pay what you want).

Radiohead's latest album represents a continuing trend in the music world. In an age when early leaks can cost artists and labels a hefty sum, getting the music out there (and establishing the cost of it) as early as possible has been a boon to a number of bands over the past few years. Here are a few of the greatest (and most successful) experiments from the past few years.

Radiohead, In Rainbows
Back in the fall of 2007, rumors had circulated that Radiohead were in the studio and working on an album, though nobody knew when it would be finished or released. The Internet got its answer one morning when the band not only announced that In Rainbows was done but that it was also available immediately. Fans could pay whatever they felt like for a digital download of the album, with the option to order a deluxe edition for significantly more.

Nine Inch Nails, Ghosts I-IV
Once Trent Reznor liberated himself from his record label, he went on a crazy jag of creative output. First up was Ghosts I-IV, a series of instrumentals that he described as "soundtracks to daydreams." A mysterious post went up on the Nine Inch Nails website that said "2 weeks!" and two weeks later Ghosts I-IV appeared as a free download (in an interesting twist, Reznor even made a free torrent available). Like Radiohead, more deluxe editions of the album were made available at greater price points, including a "Ultra-Deluxe Limited Edition" that sold for $300 and moved all 2,500 copies made.

The Raconteurs, Consolers of the Lonely
Jack White had always protected his music while with the White Stripes (journalists used to have to jump through hoops to hear new albums, especially when Icky Thump came out), and he transferred that same philosophy over to his band the Raconteurs. When the time came to put out their second album, rumors swirled around the Internet for a day or two before the band officially announced that Consolers of the Lonely existed and that it would be ready to buy at iTunes in a week (though iTunes did end up selling it early).

Nine Inch Nails, The Slip
Following the success of Ghosts I-IV, Reznor dropped a proper Nine Inch Nails album a few months later. Called The Slip, it appeared on the Nine Inch Nails website with the simple message, "This one's on me." Once again, a physical edition was made available some time later.

Jack White is one of the most talented and prolific members of the rock universe and has been maintaining that remarkable profile for a decade. Though the last White Stripes album only came out three years ago (that was 2007's Icky Thump), it seems like it has been a lot longer since Jack tag-teamed with his bandmate (and ex-wife) Meg for their particular brand of minimalist garage blues. That's probably because White has been so busy over the past few years, dropping albums both as a member of the Raconteurs and as a member of the Dead Weather (not to mention those songs from "Cold Mountain" and the theme song from the 2008 James Bond film "Quantum of Solace"). While all of those projects have been excellent (particularly the Dead Weather, whose second album Sea of Cowards is one of the most underrated releases of this year), White's first band is apparently making a return soon.

"Now that we've gotten a lot of that out of our system, Meg and I can get back in the studio and start fresh," White told Vanity Fair in an interview that will be published in their December issue. The "that" in question is the massive White Stripes Merchandise Collection, a perfect stocking stuff for White Stripes obsessives that includes an LP and 7-inch singles vinyl box set, a record player, a slipmat, branded headphones and a red vinyl pressing of the rare 2002 "Merry Christmas From the White Stripes." The price? A cool $499.

The construction of the set was a big undertaking. "We thought we'd do a lot of things that we'd never done: a full tour of Canada, a documentary, coffee-table book, live album, a boxed set," he said. "It was one long project that took almost three years."

With the past purged, the White Stripes can get back to the business of rocking. Amazingly, the band was arguably at the height of its power when they walked away for the time being in 2007. That year, they released Icky Thump, a savage, complicated collection of jams that takes their minimalist aesthetic and finds an entirely new set of boundaries and cliffs. It will be good to have them back, but until then, keep cranking up the Dead Weather.

Lollapalooza's front gateThis place needs its own zip code. Really. It’s been a few years since I was at Lollapalooza, but this place qualifies as a small town within one of America’s biggest cities. Took a full half hour to walk the length of Grant Park this afternoon. Began the day with two sets from very different places, geographically and musically – conscience and hip-hop from Somali musician K’naan, followed by my brothers from the ATL, The Black Lips, delivering plenty of flower punk, and some gobs of spit.

(Watch our video interviews from Chicago, including chats with the Cool Kids and the Black Lips, and check back for more all weekend!)

Speaking of expectorate, you can’t spit at this place without hitting a beer stand. Bud Light everywhere you turn, plus there’s a beer garden this year with a ton of microbrews. Food is another matter. No, really. I hiked half a mile until I came across any food vendors. Very odd. Not sure if they are trying to keep the garbage in one place, but not a good move.

On my walk, I passed Perry’s – Perry Farrell’s dance tent in a grove. Very cool atmosphere – though this early in the day, and without the benefit of, you know, the state of mind that makes dance tents fly, it was a bit subdued. DJ Wally Joy on the ones and twos, and hanging from the trees there were day glo fabrics and spheres, from the man who gave you Porno for Pyros and ENIT. Once a trippy dude, always a trippy dude.

Did someone say trippy? Next on my journey, I encountered “Eat Your Own Spaceship,” a circus tent seemingly operated by none other than those creatures from another galaxy called Oklahoma, the Flaming Lips, who are screening their long-discussed film “Christmas on Mars” here at Lolla. The tent is surrounded by pics of the Lips, and written in Russian, a call to make weed weegal.

Finally, I found a vegan burrito (they are gonna starve these people) and now it’s off to an afternoon and evening chatting with Grizzly Bear, Duffy, CSS, the Raconteurs and more. No Radiohead interview, alas. Thom: If you are reading this, I will be on site till about 11 if you change your mind.

Chili Pepper Anthony Kiedis is set to curate a new summer fest in...Pittsburgh?

The two-day New American Music Union will give attention to 15 new college bands -- and other little-known acts such as the Raconteurs and Gnarls Barkley. The college acts taking part will also be judged (like "American Idol"!), with the winner given a full day of recording in a top LA studio for free. American Eagle, which is sponsoring the fest, will also promote the band's record in their stores.

Tickets go on sale tomorrow.

This in from MTV News super-shooter Akshay Bhansali:

I just spent a rather bizarre weekend down in New Orleans. My dad serves on the board of directors of the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, and the final weekend wrapped yesterday. It all started with a party at the family house, which involved consuming copious amounts duck po-boy, boudin balls, and soft-shell crawfish (yes, you can apparently soften more than just crab), and fixing Gwyneth Paltrow's mom’s cellphone(??). Blythe Danner is an incredibly cool woman!

After the party I cruised over to Frenchman Street in the Marigny to catch M.I.A. perform in a crazy steamy warehouse. The crowd hardly seemed to care about the heat -- when she opened her epic show with "Bamboo Banger," the room became pure, awesome chaos. Maya had Cherry, always at her side, onstage with her, and even her brother Sugu was hyping up the crowd! She ended with the album closer "Paper Planes," which not only puts a new spin on a Clash classic but works shockingly well in the “Pineapple Express” trailer, correct??

Pics from JazzFest -- and what M.I.A. reveals to Akshay backstage -- after the jump. Read More...

The Raconteurs (i.e. Jack White with an actual band) kick off their tour esta noche in Nashville. Go watch them play. In case you haven't seen it, that's the video for "Salute Your Solution" up above -- it's the first single off their suddenly-dropped Consolers of the Lonely album.

Also, we’re into the band's totally lo-fi, Logo-era website. (Websites are places where you can find virtual information that you used to have to look for in zines.)

Dates -- some with the Black Lips and the Fiery Furnaces, who we also like -- after the jump. Read More...
