It’s one of the biggest categories of the night. Previous winners include Eminem, Lady Gaga, Alicia Keys, 50 Cent, Justin Bieber and Nirvana. We’re talking about the MTV Video Music Award for Best New Artist, and as usual, this year’s nominees represent some of the hottest new acts in music.

With talent this diverse vying for the Moonman, it’s anyone’s guess who will walk away from the Aug. 28 ceremony victorious. Will voters opt for Big Sean’s smooth R&B hit “My Last” or will they lean toward the harder hip-hop of Tyler, The Creator’s “Yonkers” or Wiz Khalifa’s “Black and Yellow”? Will they prefer Kreayshawn's fun and funky “Gucci Gucci” to Foster the People’s fresh rocker “Pumped Up Kicks”?

We have not idea who’s going to take the prize, but you can cast your vote here.

What we do know is that many of the winners of this prize have gone on to enjoy enormous fame and great success on the charts. In fact, two of the biggest stars in the world right now are our two most recent winners. With the big show just a few days away, we thought we’d check in on the last five winner to see how things are going! Read More...

It's MTV's second annual Musical March Madness! MTV News took the 64 biggest names in rock, split them up into four regions, assigned them seeds and puts them up against one another in a single-elimination series of match-ups in a winner-take-all contest. We're leaving it to you to decide an actual champ in this field of 64, so over the next few weeks, fan voting will determine who will emerge as this year's champion. It's all about the fans, and the artist with the most passionate fan base will score the awesome Musical March Madness trophy!

The regional finals in the Midwest and West are both already intense battles, and the match-up in the South will be no different. Both of the squads left in the South have incredibly intense followings, and this should be another extra-close contest.

Voting for all Elite Eight match-ups will close on Thursday, March 31 at midnight. As always, you can follow all the voting here.

(5) Paramore vs. (14) Tokio Hotel
Paramore might have delivered the most impressive performance of the tournament when they defeated Linkin Park in a nail-biting fiasco that came right down to the final minutes. That particular match-up grabbed more votes than any pairing so far, which is also impressive. For their efforts, Paramore will go head-to-head with Tokio Hotel for the right to advance to the Final Four. Tokio Hotel took out Muse in the Sweet 16, but Paramore poses their greatest challenge yet. Who will come out on top? Your votes will decide it!

Sweet 16 voting has already been fast and furious, as fans get in their votes early to build leads for their favorite bands in this smaller voting window. The round continues with another key match-up in the South regional semi-finals. Like most of the remaining field, either one of the teams below could make a push to the top of the heap.

Voting for all Sweet 16 match-ups will close on Tuesday, March 29 at midnight. As always, you can follow all the voting here.

(2) Muse vs. (14) Tokio Hotel
Muse squeaked by Cobra Starship in the first round and then made quick work of Weezer in the second, which now puts them in the unenviable position of taking on Tokio Hotel. Last year's big Cinderella team certainly seems to be wearing the glass slipper again, as they have bested Mumford & Sons and Adele despite their lower ranking. Will they continue their push toward the championship, or will Muse fans continue to galvanize and help their favorite band stand tall? Vote and find out!

The round of 32 has been intense thus far, and it's only about to get more intense. With two match-ups already presented in the South bracket, this third one may be the most intriguing if only because it features two upset-minded underdogs.

Voting for all second round match-ups will close on Sunday, March 27 at midnight. As always, you can follow all the voting here.

(11) Adele vs. (14) Tokio Hotel
In the only second round pairing that put together two upset victors from round one, the upset minded Adele (who beat back Kid Rock to advance) takes on the rabid fan base of Tokio Hotel (who bested Mumford & Sons in round one). No matter who wins, the one left standing could end up being the lowest seed in the Sweet 16. Which artist will keep wearing the glass slipper? Weigh in with your vote!

We're half way through the South bracket, with a handful of bands jumping out to early leads (in an upset-in-the-making, No Doubt is already way ahead of Paramore). Here are two more match-ups, featuring a lot of underdogs who could really put the tournament on its ear.

Just as a reminder, first round voting continues through Sunday night (March 20), and you can catch up with any match-ups you might have missed here. Let's get to the match-ups!

(6) Kid Rock vs. (11) Adele
At first glance, it seems like this would be something of a lopsided match-up. After all, Kid Rock is a veteran who has reached fans of rock, hip-hop, blues and country, and he effortlessly churns out his after hit, year after year. But Adele has picked up a tremendous amount of heat over the past few months, notching two weeks at the top of the Billboard Top 200 with her just-released second album 21 and turning more and more heads on both sides of the Atlantic. Can she pull off the upset, or will Detroit's favorite son prevail?

(3) Mumford & Sons vs. (14) Tokio Hotel
Mumford & Sons are the Cinderella story of the year, a folk and bluegrass combo who have steadily picked up fans and respect all around the world (and they've sold a million albums to boot). Meanwhile, Tokio Hotel was the Cinderella story of last year's Musical March Madness tournament, as they overcame their low seed to fly all the way to the Final Four before being ousted by eventual champs Coheed and Cambria. With a slightly better seed and a bit more experience under their belts, can Tokio Hotel make that extra push, or will Mumford & Sons spoil the party? Your votes decide it!

Watch Adele lay down her case for victory!

Raise a glass to Tokio Hotel frontman Bill Kaulitz, who turns 21 years old today. The German singer and fashion icon is already something of an industry veteran, performing with his twin brother Tom since he was 10 years old. They plugged away quietly as Black Question Mark until they met Georg Listing and Gustav Schafer, who filled out their band and turned them into Devilish. The young band continued to play shows and attempt to get discovered until Bill performed on the German version of "Star Search" in 2003. He didn't win (he was eliminated in the quarter-finals), but his one-of-a-kind voice and unique sense of style scored his band a recording contract. They changed their name (again) to Tokio Hotel, and the rest is history.

Tokio Hotel were instant sensations in their native Germany, melding together pieces of punk, metal, glam and dance music for a new, vibrant stew. Their first album Schrei (which means "scream") became a hit, moving over a million copies worldwide (interestingly, some songs were re-recorded a year later when Bill's voice dropped due to puberty). They followed up with Zimmer 483, but it was their first English album (Scream, which contained remakes of songs from their first two albums) that really kicked it up a notch. They made huge inroads into America, where they were greeted with the same sort of fervor that they received elsewhere in the world.

A true international band, Tokio Hotel have wooed fans with universal music and a truly forward-thinking sense of fashion and style. (Thousands of words have been written about Bill Kaulitz's hair alone.) Bill has plenty to celebrate today, so happy birthday to him.

What would you get Bill Kaulitz for his birthday? Let us know in the comments!

It's Musical March Madness! The sprawling bracket — both a parody and a tribute to the NCAA basketball tournament, masterminded by MTV News' James Montgomery — takes the 65 biggest names in rock, splits them up into four regions, assigns them seeds and puts them up against one another in a single-elimination series of match-ups in a winner-take-all contest. We're leaving it to you to decide an actual champ in this field of 65. Over the next few weeks, we will present a series of polls that will allow you to vote for the match-ups presented in MTV News' Band Bracketology. You vote for the winners, we'll keep advancing the seeds and, in the end, we'll have some sort of champion. What will the winner receive? Little more than our esteem (as well as that of the fans) and some Internet bragging rights.

Welcome to the Final Four! It has been a long, intense set of battles, but our field of 65 is down to the quartet of regional winners. They'll throw down this weekend in a pair of killer match-ups. Voting will be open until Sunday, April 4 at 10 p.m. Eastern, and there's a new twist in this round: You won't be able to see the percentages until voting actually closes (we're letting some special surprise guests reveal the final match-up on Monday, April 5). We move on to the second of our Final Four match-ups, a showdown between two of the best-supported bands in the entire field.

East Regional Champion Tokio Hotel vs. South Regional Champion Coheed and Cambria
In the NCAA basketball tournament, the lowest seed making the Final Four this year was a number five (both Butler and Michigan State had that number). But in MTV News' Musical March Madness, the Final Four has a 15 (in Coheed and Cambria) and a 16 (Tokio Hotel). It's no wonder, as the fans of both groups have committed themselves to getting each one through the many rounds of this tournament. But only one can make it to the finals, so which will compete for the chance to hoist the championship trophy?

The voting for the Elite Eight round of the MTV News Musical March Madness tournament continues until 10 p.m. EST Thursday night (April 1), and the race to the Final Four is tight and intense. Tokio Hotel, Muse, My Chemical Romance and Coheed and Cambria are all the front-runners, but each of their opponents — Owl City, the White Stripes, Panic! at the Disco and Alice in Chains, respectively — could make a late-round run for an upset. Check out the video below of the full breakdown of the Elite Eight.

While you're voting for your favorite bands to push them into the Final Four (you can check out all of the still-open polls at this link), be sure to take a look at the Elite Eight gallery, which puts each of the bands left in the tournament in a basketball-themed context. Who knew that Panic! at the Disco frontman Brendon Urie had such Globetrotter-esque ball skills?

There won't be any new polls put out today, but the voting for the Sweet 16 round of MTV News' Musical March Madness continues today. All polls will close at 10 p.m. on Tuesday night (March 30), at which point the Elite Eight will be set. Most of the Sweet 16 match-ups are still pretty tight, so even if you're favorite band is behind in the standings, there's plenty of time to stage a comeback with some well-organized clicking. Take a look at how we got here, and then give a gander at the current slate of games.

(6) Phish vs. (15) Coheed and Cambria
A heated head-to-head. Coheed and Cambria currently leads the race, but the Phish fans in the comments section keep declaring "P.A.W.: Phish Always Win." Can they follow through on their promise?

(9) Adam Lambert vs. (13) Alice in Chains
The grunge veterans currently have a commanding lead over Lambert, though you can never count the Glamberts out of any competition involving their favorite "Idol" star.

(2) Muse vs. (14) AFI
AFI went on an early run, but the people who turned Muse into a stadium-filling international phenomenon have also put them ahead in the standings. But it's still anybody's game.
