The gigantic hourglass we keep in the MTV Newsroom is nearly empty, which means that it's time for another weekend. For 48 hours, there will be nothing but trips to the cinema, decadent brunches, kite flying in parks, shoe shopping and watching the premiere of "The Client List" on Lifetime. But before you get to all that excitement, be sure to check out all the awesome stories you might have missed this week on the MTV Newsroom blog, including some debates about Eminem, good news for U2 and a remembrance for legendary comic writer (and misanthrope) Harvey Pekar.

» There were all sorts of debates about the collaborative work of Eminem this week (in fact, you can still vote in one of the polls), and it all began with the question of whether or not "Love the Way You Lie" was his best team-up with a female artist. (According to you, it was!)

» The MTV World Cup of Rock came to a close, with the mighty team from South Korea taking the championship.

» In a charming video posted to their Web site, U2 announced that Bono's back is healing nicely and that they will be back to make up their canceled North American tour dates next summer.

» The MTV reality sensation "The Hills" called it quits this week in a memorable finale, and the debate was opened over whether it was more influential than "The Real World." Where do you stand?

» The world of comics (and music and the greater Cleveland area) mourned the loss of iconic writer Harvey Pekar, who passed away this week at the age of 70. He will be sorely missed both by the people who knew him and the fans who admired him.

It's MTV's World Cup of Rock! The World Cup is the greatest sporting event on the planet, a super-sized stage where legends are born with every strike of the ball, where infamy is just a moment away and where the dreams of millions live or die by the minute. That's why, in the spirit of the 2010 MTV Musical March Madness competition, we've created "The World Cup (Of Rock)," a FIFA-style tournament that takes 16 of the biggest nations — rock-wise (sorry Algeria) — and pits them against one another to determine just which is the most rockingly awesome. Heavyweights like the U.S.A., England, France and Germany are all here, but so are a handful of surprisingly strong sleeper countries. As the Cup progresses, we'll be unveiling the match-ups, and it's up to you to vote your favorites through. In the end, only one nation will be left standing: the world champion of rock.

After dozens of matches, hundreds of thousands of votes, plenty of thrilling upsets and some truly committed fans, the MTV World Cup of Rock has come to a close, and we're happy to congratulate South Korea as the grand champion. While the final match of the 2010 FIFA World Cup of Rock was an anti-climatic slog of a game between Spain and the Netherlands, the last showdown of MTV's World Cup of Rock was exciting down to the final minute of voting. Powered by the support of international K-Pop superstar Rain, South Korea jumped out to an early lead, only to be overtaken by the raw power of Tokio Hotel and Germany. But as the hours ticked down, South Korea slowly fought their way back and managed to surge ahead of their competition.

It was a tremendous battle, and both groups of fans should be proud. In fact, kudos to the commenters on the final match post, as they all seem to be shaking hands and paying respect to one another. In many ways, it's the virtual version of the teams exchanging jerseys at the end of a match.

In the third place game, Australia (perhaps one of the biggest surprises in the entire tournament) topped Mexico to take the bronze medal. It was yet another comeback victory that featured an early Mexican lead and a late Australian surge.

Thanks to everybody who voted, commented and got involved in the inaugural MTV World Cup of Rock, and congratulations again to South Korea (and specifically to fans of Rain). Your favorite superstar would be proud of you.

The long weekend created a short week here in the MTV Newsroom, but that doesn't mean there was any less action going down in this space. Despite the oppressive heat, we managed to sweat through an extremely busy week that featured some high-profile performances, a captivating legal decision and the decision that changed the fortunes of a handful of American cities all at once. Before you get ready for the last matches of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, head to the movies to see "The Twilight Saga: Eclipse" (again) or experiment with the best recipe for a Michelada, be sure to check out everything you might have missed.

» Lady Gaga had an extremely busy week. She began with a headlining gig at Madison Square Garden.

» Gaga didn't stop there, though, as she attracted more than 20,000 people to the set of "Today" for a rain-soaked set that made us think about Elton John and Billy Joel.

» Of course, Gaga wasn't the only star grabbing headlines this week. Basketball phenom LeBron James took up an awful lot of bandwidth and airtime this week, but he finally announced he will join Dwayne Wade and Chris Bosh in Miami with the Heat.

» James' decision threw Cleveland Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert into quite a tizzy. So now whenever a band breaks up acrimoniously, the remaining members are free to "pull a Gilbert."

» The MTV World Cup of Rock concludes this weekend, so make sure you vote for your favorite in the final match to determine whether Germany or South Korea truly rocks harder.

» For the first time in a while, Prince grabbed a number of headlines when he announced that he thought the Internet is "over."

One of the great traditions of the FIFA World Cup is the consolation game, which matches up the two losers in the semi-final round and puts them up against each other to see who should own third place. This Saturday (July 10), Uruguay will square off against Germany to see who will own that position and carry a bit of momentum into the next World Cup in 2014. Meanwhile, the MTV World Cup of Rock's third place game features two teams who put up good fights but ultimately fell to the two juggernauts in this tournament. You have from now until 11:59 p.m. this Sunday, July 11 to get your votes in, and we'll officially announce the winner on Monday, July 12!

Australia vs. Mexico
Australia tore through group play and the bracket before running into the monster that is Germany, while Mexico put up a series of excellent fights before dropping their semi-final match to South Korea. Which team will end up walking away with the bronze medal? Only you can decide!

It has been a long tournament, but we have finally arrived at the finals for both the 2010 FIFA World Cup and the MTV World Cup of Rock. In the former, Spain will take on the Netherlands in a match-up of two excellent soccer countries who have never won the big prize. While there is debate over whether the two best teams actually made the finals, there is no question that the two most elite squads are squaring off in the MTV World Cup of Rock. You have from now until 11:59 p.m. this Sunday, July 11 to get your votes in, and we'll officially announce the winner on Monday, July 12!

Germany vs. South Korea
In the championship game of our tournament, two powerhouses will go toe-to-toe for the respect and adoration of the world. On one side, the dominant Germany, fueled by the power and grace of Tokio Hotel. Across the field stands South Korea, a proud, fighting squad inspired by the multiple talents of Rain. Each team has a strong fan base ready to push it to the limit for the glory of their favorite squad, but which one will stand tall? Only you can decide!

The 2010 FIFA World Cup has narrowed down its initial field of 32 teams down to just two. After a stunning and tense semi-final match against Germany, Spain emerged the victor and will take on the Netherlands in the final match this Sunday, July 11. That means the third place game will pit Uruguay against the Germans this Saturday, July 10. The final match guarantees that one of those nations will be winning its very first World Cup, and both Spain and the Netherlands are countries with excellent soccer pedigrees who deserve a shot at the big prize.

Meanwhile, there are only a few hours left to vote in the two semi-final matches in the MTV World Cup of Rock (both polls close tonight at 11:59 p.m. ET). Though the German team has no chance at winning the soccer tournament, they can still play for the championship in the World Cup of Rock — if they maintain their commanding lead over a powerful but perhaps over-matched squad from Australia.

The other semi-final game sees South Korea continuing to hold off surges from Mexico. Fans of Rain (who call themselves "Clouds") have been staying organized and keeping the attack on, which could mean too much for Mexico. But anything is still possible, and only you can decide who will play for the big prize in the MTV World Cup of Rock!

Today, Germany and Spain will go toe-to-toe to determine who will go up against the Netherlands in the championship match at the 2010 FIFA World Cup. It should be a classic tilt between two European powerhouses, and though the German team seems to be the favorite, they are a very young and somewhat inexperienced squad who could easily get surprised by the precision of the Spanish attack.

Meanwhile, voting remains open in the two semi-finals matches in the MTV World Cup of Rock. Germany is still alive in that tournament as well, and they currently hold a commanding lead over their challengers from Australia. The Tokio Hotel fans seem to be on a cruise to the finals, but you should never underestimate the ability of followers of AC/DC, Silverchair, Jet or INXS to make a bit of noise.

In the other game, South Korea is breaking away from Mexico. Can the supporters of superstar Rain finish the job, or will Santana and his fellow Mexican cohorts find themselves in the finals and challenging for the big prize? Only you can decide!

Uruguay and the Netherlands (or Holland, if you swing that way) are currently embroiled in a tense match for the right to advance into the finals of the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Two slots in the finals are also up for grabs in the MTV World Cup of Rock, and the two teams below will compliment the winner of the South Korea/Mexico tilt announced earlier today. As a reminder, the voting for the two semi-final matches will close at 11:59 p.m. ET on Thursday, July 8.

Germany vs. Australia
Like their actual counterparts on the soccer field, this German team has been absolutely unstoppable, not only pushing themselves through the tournament but also knocking off rival Japan in the process. That sentiment helped out Australia, who advanced to the semis on the back of AC/DC enthusiasts. Can the Tokio Hotel-fueled Germany take their place in the finals, or will Australia score an upset? Only you can decide!

The semi-final round of the 2010 FIFA World Cup begins today with an intriguing game between the surging Netherlands (who bested Brazil in one of the best matches of the tournament) and Uruguay (who knocked out Ghana in a thrilling match that went to a heartbreaking round of penalty kicks). The semi-final round of the MTV World Cup of Rock also get moving today. Only four teams remain alive, and each one could easily make a claim as the rockingest nation on the planet. Voting will be open until 11:59 p.m. on Thursday, July 8, with the finals getting launched on Friday, July 9.

South Korea vs. Mexico
South Korea continues its blast through the tournament and easily bested the Gabe Saporta-led Uruguay in the last round, while Mexico overcame a disappointing United States team (apparently there are more Santana fans out there than we thought). But can those fans overcome the power of Rain and the South Korean contingent? Only you can decide!
